Why One Compartment Can Be Right and the Other Wrong

Almost every domestic refrigerator makes cold in exactly one place. A single evaporator sits behind the rear wall of the freezer, and a fan blows air across it. Part of that air stays in the freezer; the rest is pushed through a duct into the fresh-food compartment, usually past a motorised or thermostatic flap that decides how much gets through.

So the freezer is cold by proximity — it is the room the cold is made in. The fridge is cold only by delivery. Break the delivery and you get precisely this symptom: 0°F below and 50°F above, with the compressor humming away perfectly happily. That architecture is why the fault list here is short, cheap and mechanical rather than refrigeration work.

The Four Causes in Detail

Evaporator fan

A small brushless or shaded-pole motor behind the freezer’s rear panel. It wears out, its bearings seize, or its blade catches on frost and stalls. The tell is silence: with the freezer door open and the door switch defeated, you should hear it. A stopped fan produces exactly this symptom within a few hours, because the freezer holds its own temperature while nothing at all reaches the fridge.

Defrost heater, thermostat or control

Frost-free means the machine deliberately warms its evaporator several times a day to melt the frost that condenses on it. Three things can stop that cycle: the heater itself, the bimetal thermostat that permits it, or the control that schedules it. When it stops, ice accumulates over days until the evaporator is a solid block and the fan can no longer pull air through it. This is the cause behind the classic pattern of a fridge that gets steadily worse over two weeks, recovers completely after being switched off overnight, then repeats.

Air damper and blocked ducts

The damper is a flap in the duct between the two compartments; a stuck flap starves the fridge no matter how well everything else works. Blocked vents do the same thing for free — a stack of containers pressed against the rear wall, or a full shelf right under the air outlet, and the compartment upstream of the obstruction goes warm. Always worth clearing before assuming a part has failed.

Thermistors and control board

The machine only cools when a sensor tells it to. A thermistor reading several degrees off leaves a perfectly healthy refrigerator sitting idle while the compartment warms, and the display will happily show the number it believes. It is one of the cheaper parts in the machine, and it is the reason a proper diagnosis measures sensor resistance rather than trusting the panel.

Twin Evaporators: the Exception Worth Knowing

A minority of refrigerators, mostly larger French-door and premium built-in models, carry two evaporators — one per compartment — precisely so that the fresh-food section does not depend on air borrowed from the freezer. On those machines this symptom means something different: the freezer’s circuit is working and the fridge’s own circuit is not, which can be a second fan, a solenoid valve that routes refrigerant between the two evaporators, or genuinely a sealed-system fault confined to the fridge side.

You cannot tell by looking at the front. What you can do is take the model number off the sticker inside the fresh-food compartment, usually on a side wall or behind a drawer, and read it out when you book. It changes what the technician expects to find and what comes off the van, and on a twin-evaporator machine it is the difference between a fan and a valve.

The other design worth flagging is the linear or inverter compressor, now common. Those run continuously at varying speed rather than cycling on and off, so a machine that never seems to stop is behaving as designed. Judge those by temperature, not by sound.

The useful point about this particular symptom is that it lands you in the lower half of that table by definition. Fans, defrost heaters, dampers and thermistors are not expensive parts, and none of them require opening the refrigerant circuit. Before the Visit

  • Move the food. The freezer is cold, so use it, or a cooler with ice
  • Clear the rear vents and pull the shelves an inch forward. Sometimes that is the whole repair
  • Listen for the fan with the freezer door open and the door switch pressed in
  • Look for frost at the back wall of the freezer and water under the crisper drawers
  • Do not turn the dial colder. Nothing reaches the fridge either way, and it only lengthens the run time

What a Proper Diagnosis Checks

Both compartments read with an instrument against their set points; the rear panel of the freezer removed to inspect the evaporator for a coat of ice; the evaporator fan tested with the door switch defeated; the defrost heater and its thermostat measured for continuity rather than assumed; the damper operated and the duct checked for obstruction; thermistor resistance compared against specification at a known temperature; and the drain confirmed clear so melt water leaves the way it should.

Will turning the fridge off and on fix it?
If the evaporator has iced over because the defrost cycle stalled, yes — for a few days. Switching the machine off with the doors open for several hours melts the ice, air flows again and the fridge cools normally. Then the ice regrows on the same schedule, because the defrost fault itself is untouched. Treat a successful defrost as a confirmed diagnosis rather than a repair, and book the visit anyway.
Can food be blocking the airflow?
Yes, and it is worth ruling out first because it costs nothing. Containers pressed against the rear wall, or a full shelf directly under the air outlet, will starve everything downstream and read exactly like a failed fan. Pull the shelves forward an inch, clear the vents, and give it a day before concluding a part has failed.
