First Three Minutes

  • Decide whether the water is clean or not. Clean and cold points at the supply side; anything with food debris in it points at the drain
  • If it is clean, shut the valve. There is a shut-off behind the machine or under the sink, and closing it stops a supply-side leak dead
  • Get the water off the floor and out from under the machine — the appliance will survive, the floor may not
  • Pull the machine out and look underneath with a torch. A wet drain pan versus a wet line is the whole diagnosis
  • Check whether the fridge is level. A machine that has been shoved or has a settled floor under it drains the wrong way
  • Do not turn it off. Unless the leak is severe, keeping it running preserves the food and does not make the leak worse

The Blocked Defrost Drain, in Detail

Since this is the cause behind most refrigerator leaks, it is worth understanding. Every frost-free machine melts the frost off its evaporator several times a day. That melt water runs into a trough behind the freezer’s rear panel, down a tube, and into a shallow pan underneath the fridge, where the heat of the compressor evaporates it away. Nothing about the process is visible and nothing about it needs maintaining — until the tube blocks.

It blocks for two reasons. Food debris and biofilm build in the trough and work their way into the tube, or the tube freezes shut because the small heater or clip meant to keep it clear has failed. Either way the melt water has nowhere to go: it fills the trough, spills over, runs forward under the liner and emerges under the crisper drawers, and eventually onto the floor at the front of the machine.

The signature is a leak that comes in surges rather than steadily — a fresh puddle every several hours, matching the defrost schedule — often with a sheet of ice under the bottom freezer basket. Clearing the drain is a routine job. What matters is finding out why it blocked, because a frozen drain and a dirty one need different work.

The Supply Side

Any refrigerator with an ice maker or a water dispenser has a water line running to it, and that line brings a second family of faults. There are four places it leaks.

  • The connection at the wall or under the sink. Compression fittings loosen; saddle valves on old installations are notorious for weeping
  • The line itself. Plastic tubing crimped when the machine was pushed back into its opening splits later, sometimes months later
  • The inlet valve at the back of the machine. An electrically operated valve that can seep, or stay slightly open and overfill the ice maker
  • The filter housing. A filter cross-threaded or of the wrong part number will not seal, and this is a genuinely common cause after a filter change

Supply-side leaks are the ones worth acting on immediately, because mains pressure is behind them and the volume of water is unlimited. What Is Not a Fault

  • A wet drain pan. That is its job. It should hold water and evaporate it
  • Condensation on the outside in humid weather, particularly around the door frame of a machine in an unconditioned room
  • A puddle after a manual defrost. Melt water goes somewhere, and often it goes forward
  • Water once after a filter change, as trapped air clears the line. Repeated water is a seal problem
  • A little water under the crisper after loading warm wet produce, which condenses on the coldest surface nearby
  • A new machine dripping in its first day, while the whole cabinet comes down to temperature and the cabinet’s own humidity condenses

Two practical notes. First, take a photograph of the dried outline on the floor before you mop, because the shape of the stain says where the water was arriving from and that is information a technician cannot recover later. Second, put a folded towel under the front edge rather than a shallow tray: a tray fills and tips, a towel wicks, and it also shows you overnight whether the leak is continuous or in surges.

Stopping It Coming Back

Drain blockages recur if the conditions that caused them recur, so a repair is worth pairing with a habit or two. Wipe up spills inside promptly rather than letting them dry into the shelf grooves, since the residue eventually reaches the trough. Twice a year, when you clean the condenser coils, look at the drain pan and empty it if it is holding old water rather than fresh. Keep the machine level with the front very slightly high so gravity favours the drain. And when the fridge is pushed back into its opening after any work, check the water line is looped rather than crimped against the wall, because a crimp today is a split months from now.
