Maytag is the brand where the machine’s age changes the answer most. Whirlpool acquired Maytag in 2006, and since then Maytag-badged washers have been built on Whirlpool platforms with Whirlpool parts. Machines older than that are genuine legacy designs, and they need to be approached as their own thing.

First, Does the Water Go?

Every washing machine is built not to spin with water in the drum, because spinning a full tub at speed throws water through the seals and unbalances the machine badly. The control watches a pressure switch and holds the spin back until it is satisfied the tub is empty.

So if there is water sitting in the drum at the end of a cycle, you do not have a spin fault at all — you have a drain fault whose consequence is no spin. Post-2006 Maytag: a Whirlpool Underneath

A Maytag washer built in the last two decades shares its platform, its transmission design and most of its parts with the Whirlpool-badged equivalent. Practically, that is good news: it means the fault list is well known and the parts are made in volume and stay available for years.

  • Lid lock or lid switch. High-efficiency top-loaders lock the lid before spinning at speed; older ones use a switch. No confirmation, no spin, and the cycle finishes with wet laundry
  • Shifter actuator. On agitator-free top-loaders, the small motorised part that moves the transmission between wash and spin. The signature fault on this platform
  • Motor coupler. On direct-drive machines with an agitator, a sacrificial plastic coupling between motor and transmission. Symptom: motor runs, drum does nothing, no grinding at all
  • Drive belt. On belt-driven designs, a slipping belt gives a drum that turns weakly rather than one that refuses
  • Motor control or main board. Real but last, and worth insisting the cheaper causes are measured first

Older Legacy Maytag: a Different Machine

Pre-acquisition Maytag washers were engineered independently, with their own transmissions, their own front-loading designs, and their own parts. They were built to last and plenty are still working, which is exactly why they turn up in repair calls — but they need to be treated as legacy machines rather than as Whirlpools.

Two consequences matter to you. The fault list is different: belts, clutches, brake assemblies and transmission components feature more heavily than actuators and couplers. And parts availability is genuinely variable — some components are still easy to get, others have to be hunted, and a few are effectively gone. Which means the honest first step on an older machine is confirming the part exists before agreeing to the work.

That is not an argument against repairing them. A legacy Maytag with an available part is often worth fixing, because the rest of the machine is frequently in better condition than a modern one of half its age. It is an argument for checking availability first rather than discovering it afterwards.

Before You Book: the Free Checks

  • Redistribute the load. One heavy item on one side — a bath mat, a duvet — makes the machine deliberately reduce or abandon the spin
  • Take some out. An overloaded drum never reaches spin speed, and overloading is the leading cause of coupler wear
  • Check it does not rock when you push a top corner, and that it is not touching the wall or a cabinet
  • Confirm the programme. Delicate and hand-wash cycles spin at a fraction of the maximum, by design
  • Listen for the lid lock at the start of the spin, if the machine has one
  • Find the model number — under the lid or on the back of the console on a top-loader — and photograph it
  • Note the machine’s rough age, because on a Maytag that is what identifies the platform

What “Commercial Technology” Actually Means

Maytag markets several domestic washers with commercial-grade language on the badge, and it is worth understanding what that does and does not imply for a repair. It generally describes heavier-duty components in the areas that take the load — motors, transmissions, cabinets — and it comes with longer coverage on some of those parts on some models.

What it does not mean is that the small parts are different. The lid lock, the shifter actuator, the pressure switch and the drain pump on a heavy-duty badged machine are the same class of component doing the same job, and they fail in the same way at the same sort of interval. So a machine sold on durability can still be stopped from spinning by a modest part, and that is not a contradiction — it is the design working as intended, with the cheap component going before the expensive one.

The practical value is in the paperwork rather than the badge. If the machine is under about ten years old, dig out the documents before booking, because longer coverage on a motor or a transmission changes who should be doing the work and at whose cost. Read your own terms rather than relying on a general rule.

One Controlled Test Instead of Ten Retries

Repeatedly restarting a spin on a machine that will not do it has a real cost. On a direct-drive top-loader every attempt shock-loads the coupler and the transmission. On a high-efficiency machine every attempt drives the actuator against a position it cannot reach. And on any machine with tired bearings, spinning at speed is what turns a bearing job into a drum-and-bearing job.

So do it once, properly. Empty the drum. Put in a light, evenly distributed load — a few shirts, nothing heavy. Confirm the machine is level and not touching the wall. Run a normal spin, not a delicate programme. Then write down exactly what happened: whether the motor ran, whether anything clicked, whether the drum moved at all, whether there was noise or a smell. That one observation plus the model number is worth more than a dozen retries, and it is usually enough for the right part to arrive on the first visit.
