A standalone freezer and the freezer compartment of a refrigerator fail the same way, through the same parts: defrost heater and timer, evaporator fan, thermostat or sensor, door gasket, control board, compressor. So the city-level detail for freezer work lives on that city’s refrigerator page, written for its own water, housing stock and utility rather than copied from a template. Pick your city below. Chest and upright freezers, garage units and built-in drawers are all in scope.

A freezer that is losing temperature is on a clock, so call rather than book if food is at risk. Full city list on our locations index, plus the Florida and Texas service area hubs.
A freezer that is losing temperature is on a clock, and the failure list is short. Frost on the coil, a fan that stopped, a gasket that no longer seals, or the sealed system. Three of those four are inexpensive, and which one you have is decided in the first twenty minutes of the visit. The diagnostic is $99 and is waived when you approve the repair, every job carries a 90-day parts-and-labour warranty, and we work ten metro areas. Florida and general (863) 474-2970, Texas (281) 205-1474.
Frost is the symptom people describe and almost never the fault itself. A freezer defrosts on a cycle, and when the defrost heater, timer or sensor stops working, ice builds on the evaporator coil until air cannot move through it. The cabinet then warms up while the compressor runs continuously, which looks like a dying compressor and usually is not.
Chest freezers and garage units have their own pattern. A garage freezer in a hot climate is working far outside what it was designed for, so condenser coils clog faster and door gaskets fail earlier. Standalone chest freezers are mechanically simpler and often outlive the house, but their gaskets and thermostats still go.
| Repair | Typical cost, parts and labour |
|---|---|
| Start relay | $110 to $250 |
| Defrost heater or thermostat | $150 to $350 |
| Door gasket | $130 to $300 |
| Control board | $150 to $350 |
| Water inlet valve | $90 to $220 |
| Condenser coil cleaning and check | $90 to $160 |
| Condenser or evaporator fan motor | $150 to $320 |
Freezers share their sealed system and defrost parts with refrigerators, so these are the medians of the ranges published on our nine metro refrigerator pages, for parts and labour. The $99 diagnostic sits outside them and comes off when you approve the work.
Each of these costs nothing and each one resolves a real share of the calls we get. A technician arriving to do something you could have done in five minutes is a bad outcome for both of us.
Close the door on a note and pull. If it slides out easily the gasket is not sealing, and that alone can warm a freezer.
On a garage or basement unit this is the single most useful thing you can do, and it is free.
A sheet of ice over the coil means the defrost circuit has stopped, not that the freezer needs more cold.
| What you notice | Usual suspects, cheapest first |
|---|---|
| Not holding temperature, compressor running | Frost on the evaporator from a defrost fault, then the fan |
| Thick ice building on the back wall | Defrost heater, timer or sensor |
| Runs constantly and never stops | Condenser coils, then the door gasket, then the thermostat |
| Food partly thawed near the door | Door gasket or a door that is not closing square |
| Warm and silent | No power to the unit, then the start relay, then the compressor |
Defrost parts, fans, thermostats and gaskets are cheap enough that repairing is nearly always right. The line is the compressor: on a standalone freezer that is often at or above the price of a new one, and we will say so instead of quoting the job. If you want to run the numbers yourself first, the repair-vs-replace calculator and the appliance lifespan database are the two pages worth ten minutes.
A freezer in an unconditioned garage is doing a harder job than the one it was designed for. Ambient heat in summer means the compressor runs far longer to hold the same temperature, condenser coils clog faster, and door gaskets harden and fail earlier. Two coil cleanings a year instead of one is the single cheapest thing you can do for a garage unit, and it is free.
Chest freezers are mechanically the simplest cold appliance in the house, which is why they routinely outlast the kitchen they were bought for. They have no defrost cycle to fail, so frost is managed by you rather than by a heater, and their faults concentrate in the thermostat, the door gasket and eventually the compressor. Uprights trade that simplicity for convenience and add a defrost circuit that can fail.
Two numbers are worth keeping in your head. A full freezer holds temperature for roughly 48 hours with the door shut once it loses power, a half-full one for about 24, and packing the empty space with anything cold buys you time. And 0F is the target rather than a suggestion: at 10F food keeps but quality drops fast, and a unit that cannot hold below 10F has a fault worth diagnosing even if nothing has thawed yet.
One thing worth saying plainly, because it is a safety matter rather than an appliance one: food held above 40F for more than two hours should not go back into a working freezer, and refreezing thawed food does not undo that. If a freezer has failed with a full load, deal with the food first and the appliance second. If you are choosing between formats for a replacement, upright versus chest freezer lays out the trade-off.
What the work costs, with the base behind every figure, plus what to do in the first hour: freezer repair cost.
The most common freezer complaint we take has its own guide: freezer not freezing, including how to measure the compartment properly instead of trusting the front panel.

Each appliance has a page of its own covering how it fails, what the repair costs and when replacing beats fixing. If the machine giving you trouble is not the one on this page, start with its own.
