A filter that is not clicked home lets debris straight into the pump, which is worse than leaving it dirty.

If you are running a full third rack regularly, rinse the filter fortnightly rather than monthly. It is thirty seconds, and it is the difference between a machine that drains for a decade and one that starts backing up in its fourth year.

Scrape stones, bones, skins and labels rather than trusting the machine to handle them, because a fine filter cannot pass any of those and a grinder can be blunted by them. A blocked filter starves the wash and the drain at the same time: the pump cannot circulate clean water through the spray arms, and it cannot push waste water out at the end.
