Most vent hood calls are not motor failures. A hood that has stopped clearing the kitchen is
usually telling you that its grease filters are saturated, that the duct behind it has never been cleaned, or that a
ductless model is running on a charcoal filter that expired a year ago. Those are the first three things we check,

Ducted or ductless? The answer changes what can be fixed
Before anything else, establish which kind of hood you have, because the two fail differently and one of them
cannot do what people expect of it.
A ducted hood pushes air through a duct to the outside of the building. It removes heat, moisture,
smoke and odour, because all of it leaves the house. When one underperforms, the duct is part of the diagnosis.
A recirculating or ductless hood has no duct at all. It draws air through a grease filter, then
through a charcoal filter, and blows it back into the room. It never removes heat or moisture, only some odour, and
only while the charcoal is fresh. That charcoal is a consumable that is replaced, never washed, and a household that
has never replaced it has a hood that is moving air and cleaning almost nothing.
People convert kitchens and forget which they have. If there is no visible duct above the hood and no cap outside
the wall or roof, it is recirculating, and the fix for poor odour control is a filter rather than a technician.
Filters: the single most common cause
The metal filters across the underside of the hood are doing the real work, and they are consumables in the sense
that they demand cleaning, not replacing.
Mesh filters are layered aluminium and they clog thoroughly, because grease sets inside the mesh
where you cannot see it. A mesh filter can look acceptable and still be passing a fraction of its rated airflow.
Baffle filters are the overlapping steel channels found on professional-style hoods. They separate
grease by making the air change direction, they clean far better, and they tolerate a dishwasher.
Clean them monthly in a household that cooks daily, and more often if you fry. Hot water with degreasing detergent,
or a dishwasher cycle for baffles and most mesh filters, though check the manual first because some anodised finishes
discolour. The test that matters: hold a cleaned filter up to a light. If you cannot see light through it evenly, it
is still blocked.
The reason this section comes before the mechanical ones is simple. A saturated filter reduces extraction, makes
the blower work against resistance, and eventually lets grease past into the duct and the fan housing, which turns a
ten-minute cleaning job into a much larger one.
The duct behind the hood
On a ducted hood, everything downstream of the filters matters and none of it is visible.
Duct runs follow the same physics as a dryer vent: length costs airflow and every elbow costs more. A hood on an
interior island wall, ducted up through a ceiling and out through a roof, can be at the limit of what its blower was
rated for before anything is wrong with it. If a hood has always been weak rather than having become weak, suspect the
route rather than the appliance.
Then there is the damper. There is a backdraft damper, a flap that opens when the fan runs and falls shut when it
stops so outside air does not come back in. A flap stuck shut chokes extraction completely while the fan sounds
perfectly normal, and a flap stuck open lets cold or humid outside air into the kitchen and rattles in the wind.
Both are ordinary and inexpensive to correct once identified.
Finally the termination outside: a wall or roof cap that has filled with grease-laden lint, been painted over, or
been taken over by a bird nest in spring. That is the same failure that closes dryer hoods, and it is worth looking at
from outside twice a year.
Makeup air, and hoods that seem too strong
A powerful hood in a well-sealed modern house can run into a problem that surprises people: there is not enough
replacement air for it to pull.
Air removed from a kitchen has to be replaced from somewhere. In an older leaky house it simply comes in around
windows and doors. In a tightly built one it may not, and the hood then works against a partial vacuum, which shows up
as far less extraction than the specification suggests, doors that are harder to open, and in the worst case
combustion appliances that do not vent as they should.
That last point is a safety matter rather than an appliance fault, and it is why high-output hoods are often
required to be paired with a makeup air supply. If your hood underperforms only when the house is shut up, and the
filters and duct are clear, this is the direction to look.
Noise, lights and controls
A rattle that comes and goes is usually the damper flapping or a filter not seated in its clips, and both are free
to correct. A steady whine or grinding that rises and falls with fan speed is blower bearings, which is a genuine
motor repair. A hum with no air movement means the motor is being told to run and cannot, and on multi-speed hoods a
fan that works on one speed but not another points at the switch or the board rather than the motor.
Lights fail more often than anything electronic behind them. On older hoods the heat cycling degrades the lamp
socket rather than the bulb, which is why fitting a fresh bulb sometimes changes nothing. Where a hood has been
converted to LED, a driver or a dimming module is the next suspect.
Controls are a short list: a membrane panel that has stopped registering presses, a rotary or rocker switch that
has worn, or the control board. On a hood integrated with other equipment, an over-the-range microwave especially,
the fan and lights are driven by the same board that runs the microwave, so a fan fault can be a microwave fault and

Downdraft systems are a different animal
Some kitchens have no overhead hood at all and instead use a downdraft that rises from behind or beside the
cooktop, or vents through the cooktop itself. Those are a system rather than an appliance: a motorised vent, a blower
that often sits remotely, and ducting routed under the floor or through a cabinet run.
They fail at the lift mechanism, the blower, the switch and the duct, and their ducting collects grease over years
in a way that is easy to ignore because none of it is visible. If a downdraft that used to work has quietly stopped
pulling, look at the filters and the duct before the motor. Replacement is a much bigger job than for an overhead
hood, because the cut-out, the blower position and the duct connection all have to match, which usually makes repair

Grease is a fire risk, not just a mess. Accumulated grease in filters, the
fan housing and the duct is fuel directly above a heat source. If grease is dripping back into the kitchen, if the
filters have not been cleaned in a year or more, or if you have had a stovetop flare-up, treat cleaning as urgent
rather than cosmetic.

Repair or replace
Hoods are mechanically simple and long-lived, so repair usually wins. Motors, switches, boards, lamps, sockets and
dampers are all ordinary parts, and the body of a hood does not wear out.
The cases where replacement makes more sense are narrow: a blower motor on a very old builder-grade hood where the
part costs most of a new unit, a hood whose part is genuinely no longer made, and a recirculating hood in a kitchen
where the household actually wants extraction, in which case the answer is ducting rather than a repair.
Built-in inserts and liners inside custom cabinetry are the opposite case. There the surround was built to the
unit, so replacement means joinery, and repairs that would be marginal on a freestanding hood are clearly worth
doing.
