La Marque sits in northwest Galveston County, roughly twelve miles from Galveston, on the old road between Galveston and Houston. That history is written into the housing, and the housing is what determines what breaks. The oldest streets hold modest cottages and bungalows from the early twentieth century. Behind them is a large body of postwar ranch houses, which is why the median build year here is 1977. And then, unusually for a town this size, about a third of everything has been built since 2000. A 1958 ranch and a 2016 build in the same ZIP code have almost nothing in common except the water supply and the weather.

The Two La Marques, and Why the First Question Is the Age of the House

When somebody calls us from La Marque, the first thing we ask is not the age of the appliance. It is the age of the house, because in this city that answer changes the entire shortlist.

In the postwar ranch stock, nothing in the kitchen was designed around the appliances now in it. A 1950s or 1960s house had a small refrigerator recess if it had one at all, usually no dishwasher, and a laundry arrangement that followed whatever space was available. Inside the Levee, Water Goes Out by Pump

La Marque sits inside the federal hurricane flood protection system that was authorized in 1958, begun in 1962 and completed in April 1987. In Hurricane Ike the tide came within roughly two feet of the top and did not overtop it.

That is a genuinely good position to be in, and it has one consequence people here understand better than outsiders do. A levee keeps sea water out. It also keeps rain water in. Water that falls inside the protected area cannot simply run to the bay, so it has to be moved out by pump, which is why there is a levee pump station at La Marque with a gauge on it. When a Gulf Coast rain event drops several inches an hour, the constraint is pumping capacity and interior drainage rather than the height of the levee.

Anything low is exposed to rain, not surge. The city buys about 95 percent of its water as treated surface water from the Gulf Coast Water Authority, drawn from the Brazos River. The remaining 5 percent or so comes from the city’s own groundwater wells, and La Marque maintains deep wells it can lean on in an emergency. Neighbouring Texas City runs on surface water alone.

Surface water on this coast carries enough dissolved mineral to matter over years: it narrows washer inlet valves and dishwasher spray-arm jets and it coats heating elements, all of which are mechanical problems rather than detergent problems. Gulf Coast groundwater tends to be harder than the river water and can carry iron and manganese, which show up as staining rather than scale. So a household here can see ordinary scale for years and then, in a period when the well contribution is higher, a run of rust-coloured marks on laundry or a metallic taste, and conclude the washing machine has started rusting internally. Usually it has not.

Practically: descale the dishwasher and clear its spray-arm jets once or twice a year, clear the mesh screens inside the washer inlet valve when fill slows, and if you see iron staining rather than white scale, treat it as a water question rather than an appliance fault before anybody sells you parts.
