The Drain Comes First
Not optional, and not a formality. Washing machines are interlocked against spinning with water in the drum, because spinning a full tub at speed drives water through the seals and unbalances the machine violently. The control watches a pressure switch and holds the spin until it is satisfied the tub is empty.
If there is water sitting in the drum, you have a drain fault whose consequence is no spin: filter, pump, hose, standpipe, or a pressure chamber blocked with detergent slime giving a false full reading. Belt-Drive or Direct-Drive?
The distinction matters because it changes the entire fault list. On a belt-driven machine, a motor turns a pulley, a belt turns a transmission, and a clutch or mode mechanism decides whether the drum agitates or spins — so the failures are mechanical parts you can see and feel. On a direct-drive machine the motor is effectively part of the tub assembly, driving it without belts, and the failures move toward the rotor, the stator, position sensing and the motor control.

The Suspension Nobody Suspects
On top-loaders the tub hangs on rods or springs that let it move and then damp that movement. As those wear, the tub swings further for the same imbalance — and the machine’s own detection notices. So a worn suspension does not present as a wobbly machine so much as a machine that repeatedly refuses to spin, because it keeps deciding the load is unsafe to accelerate.
The signature is a machine that starts a spin, bangs the side of the cabinet, stops, redistributes and tries again — sometimes several times before giving up and finishing the cycle with wet laundry. People read that as a control fault or a motor fault. It is usually mechanical, and the parts are modest.
Two things to check yourself: push down on one side of the empty tub and see whether it returns smoothly or bounces, and confirm the machine is level and not touching a wall or cabinet. A machine that rocks on its feet triggers the same detection at a much lower speed.
Spin Speed Is Not the Same on Every Cycle
Before assuming a fault, confirm the machine was asked to spin properly. Programme choice changes the final spin speed enormously, and a cycle that finishes with wetter clothes than you expected may be behaving exactly as designed.
- Delicate, hand-wash and wool cycles spin at a fraction of the maximum to protect fabric
- Bulky and bedding cycles often reduce the spin because large items cannot be balanced reliably
- Extra-rinse options change the sequence on some models and can alter the final spin
- A spin-speed option set to low and forgotten is worth checking on the panel
- Load sensing means a small load spins differently from a full one
- A drum-clean or maintenance cycle has its own profile and is not a normal wash

Two practical points. First, GE designs generally store fault information and offer a service mode, and the sequence varies by model — do not guess at it, but do let it be read rather than cleared, because a stored history separates an intermittent fault from a one-off. One more worth knowing: if the machine is under about ten years old, check the paperwork before booking. Overloading Is the Cause Behind the Cause
Almost every part on this page fails earlier on a machine that is habitually loaded past its capacity, and it is worth saying plainly because it is the one thing entirely within your control. A drum packed tight cannot tumble, so the load moves as a single mass; that mass is what wears suspension rods, stretches belts, loads clutches and hammers bearings.
The practical measure is not weight but movement. A correctly loaded top-loader has room for the clothes to circulate freely, and a front-loader should have a hand’s width of space above the load when it settles. Wet fabric weighs several times what dry fabric does, so a drum that looked reasonable when you filled it can be well over capacity by the spin.
Two more habits. Wash bath mats, single duvets and heavy rugs on their own or with one light item, because a lone heavy object is the classic imbalance case. And split a load rather than adding “just one more towel” — the marginal towel is what puts the drum over the line, and the machine will spend the spin cycle telling you so.
What to Note Before You Call
- Whether the drum empties — the single most useful fact, because it decides which half of the diagnosis applies
- What the machine does at the spin: nothing at all, tries and stops, turns slowly, or bangs and retries
- Any noise or smell, and whether it is new. A burning smell means switch it off now
- Whether it is load-dependent — fine with shirts, refuses with towels, which points at balance rather than parts
- Any code on the display, written down exactly rather than paraphrased
- The model number, photographed from the sticker under the lid or around the door

Lid locks, belts, clutches and suspension rods all sit inside or below that middle half. What a Proper Diagnosis Checks
The drum confirmed empty, and the drain diagnosed first if it is not; the model number recorded and the drive type identified, because belt-drive and direct-drive have different fault lists; any stored fault history read rather than cleared; the programme and spin-speed setting confirmed, since several cycles spin slowly by design; the load and levelling checked, and the machine confirmed not touching a wall; the lid lock or door lock tested for confirmation; the pressure switch and its chamber checked for a false full reading; the belt and clutch or mode mechanism inspected on belt-driven machines; the rotor, stator and position sensing checked on direct-drive machines; the suspension rods or springs tested by hand for damping; the motor’s windings and the control’s spin output measured; and the bearings assessed, to separate a spin refusal from a machine that should not be spun at all.
