The Drain Comes First

Not optional, and not a formality. Washing machines are interlocked against spinning with water in the drum, because spinning a full tub at speed drives water through the seals and unbalances the machine violently. The control watches a pressure switch and holds the spin until it is satisfied the tub is empty.

If there is water sitting in the drum, you have a drain fault whose consequence is no spin: filter, pump, hose, standpipe, or a pressure chamber blocked with detergent slime giving a false full reading. Belt-Drive or Direct-Drive?

The distinction matters because it changes the entire fault list. On a belt-driven machine, a motor turns a pulley, a belt turns a transmission, and a clutch or mode mechanism decides whether the drum agitates or spins — so the failures are mechanical parts you can see and feel. On a direct-drive machine the motor is effectively part of the tub assembly, driving it without belts, and the failures move toward the rotor, the stator, position sensing and the motor control.

The Suspension Nobody Suspects

On top-loaders the tub hangs on rods or springs that let it move and then damp that movement. As those wear, the tub swings further for the same imbalance — and the machine’s own detection notices. So a worn suspension does not present as a wobbly machine so much as a machine that repeatedly refuses to spin, because it keeps deciding the load is unsafe to accelerate.

The signature is a machine that starts a spin, bangs the side of the cabinet, stops, redistributes and tries again — sometimes several times before giving up and finishing the cycle with wet laundry. People read that as a control fault or a motor fault. It is usually mechanical, and the parts are modest.

Two things to check yourself: push down on one side of the empty tub and see whether it returns smoothly or bounces, and confirm the machine is level and not touching a wall or cabinet. A machine that rocks on its feet triggers the same detection at a much lower speed.
