Electric ovens are the most transparent appliance in a kitchen: the thing that makes the heat is right there in the cavity, and when it fails you can usually see it. That makes this one of the few faults an owner can very nearly diagnose without tools, which is worth doing before anyone quotes for a control board.

Look at the Element First

Set the oven to bake at a normal temperature, wait two or three minutes, and look through the door with the light on. A healthy bake element glows dull orange along its entire length, evenly. What you are looking for is anything that breaks that pattern.

  • No glow anywhere — the element is open circuit, or nothing is switching it on
  • Glowing in some sections and dark in others — the element is failing and will fail completely soon
  • A visible break, split or blistered spot — that is the diagnosis; elements fail spectacularly and obviously
  • A bright white flare or sparking at one point — switch the oven off at the breaker; that element is arcing
  • Element glows but the oven stays cool — the element is fine and the problem is elsewhere, usually the sensor or a door that is not sealing

Then try broil and look at the top element the same way. The answer to “does it bake, broil, both or neither” narrows the fault more than anything else you can report on the phone.

The 240-Volt Trap

Worth knowing because it produces the most confusing version of this fault. An electric oven runs on a 240-volt circuit that arrives as two 120-volt legs through a double breaker. The control, the display and the light typically run off one leg; the heating elements need both.

Lose one leg and you get an oven whose panel lights up perfectly, whose clock works, whose fan may run, and which produces no heat at all. Owners reasonably conclude the oven is broken. The actual fault is upstream, in a breaker that tripped on one half without looking obviously tripped, a loose connection, or a worn contact.

So the first move on a dead-cold electric oven is to switch the breaker fully off and fully on again — both halves, deliberately. It costs nothing and it resolves a genuine share of these. If it works and then dies again, stop resetting it and have the circuit looked at, because a breaker that trips repeatedly is reporting something real.

The bakes-but-will-not-broil row is the useful one. Bake and broil have separate elements and usually separate relays, so a half-working oven is not a dying oven — it has lost one part. People frequently assume the opposite and start pricing replacements.

When It Heats but Not Enough

That is a different fault from no heat, and it belongs to the sensor rather than the element. An oven that lights, runs and bakes badly — browning unevenly, needing longer than recipes say, reading well off an independent thermometer — is usually obeying a temperature sensor that has drifted. A sensor a few degrees out makes a mechanically healthy oven behave wrongly, and it is one of the cheaper parts in the appliance.

The order there matters: measure the achieved temperature against the set point with your own thermometer through a full cycle, check the sensor’s resistance, inspect the door seal and hinges, and only then talk about the control. Door seals deserve a mention of their own. A door that no longer pulls itself square lets heat out continuously, so the oven runs longer, browns unevenly and never quite gets there — and none of that is the element’s fault. It is worth checking before any part is ordered.

Concealed and Fan-Assisted Ovens

Not every electric oven lets you see its element, and if yours does not, the visual check above will not work. Three arrangements are common and they behave differently.

The fan row matters more than people expect. On a fan-assisted or convection oven the fan is not there to speed things up as a bonus — it distributes the heat the rear element produces, and a stopped fan gives you an oven that seems to heat weakly and cook unevenly while the element is perfectly healthy. A noisy fan that has become quiet is worth reporting.

What Kills Elements Early

  • Self-clean cycles. They run the cavity far hotter than cooking ever does, and they are hard on elements, sensors, seals and the control alike. Occasional use is fine; monthly is not
  • Spills left to bake on, which carbonise onto the element and create hot spots where it eventually breaks
  • Foil laid on the cavity floor, which traps heat against the element and blocks airflow the design assumed
  • Cleaning an element directly. It is a resistive coil in a sheath; scrubbing it damages the sheath and that is where arcing starts
  • Voltage problems, which stress every resistive heater in the house, ovens included
  • Slamming the door, which shortens the life of the seal and the hinges and eventually costs heat

The self-clean point is the one worth acting on. It is a genuinely useful feature used sparingly, and a reliable way to age an oven quickly when used as routine maintenance. Wiping spills while they are fresh does the same job without the thermal stress.

An element is a standardised part and the job is contained, so it sits at the lower end of that band. What reaches the top tenth is the control board — which is exactly why it is worth having the element and the supply legs measured before anyone concludes it is the electronics. What a Proper Diagnosis Involves

Both halves of the breaker cycled and the voltage measured on each leg at the appliance, since a lost leg explains a lit panel with no heat; the elements inspected visually and then measured for continuity and resistance rather than judged by glow alone; bake and broil circuits tested separately, because each has its own element and usually its own relay; the relays on the control board tested for actual switching rather than assumed; the temperature sensor’s resistance compared against specification at a known temperature; the achieved cavity temperature measured against the set point with an independent instrument through a full cycle; the convection fan checked where fitted; the door seal, hinges and closure checked, since heat leaking out imitates a heating fault; and the wiring and terminal block examined for heat damage, which is where an arcing element leaves evidence.
