The Parts That Squeak, and Why

The idler pulley

\n

The belt that turns the drum is kept in tension by a small spring-loaded pulley. It spins constantly on a plain bearing or a bushing, and it is the single most common source of a dryer squeal. As it dries out the squeal appears intermittently, then becomes constant, and finally the pulley seizes, at which point the belt is dragged over a stationary wheel and shreds. The repair before the seizure is a pulley; after it, a pulley and a belt, plus whatever the shredded belt wrapped itself around.

Drum rollers and glides

\n

The drum rides on rollers at the rear and, on many machines, felt or plastic glides at the front. Rollers wear flat on one side and start to thump; glides wear through and let the drum drop onto the bulkhead. Both are inexpensive parts always replaced as a set, because a new roller next to three worn ones simply wears out faster.

On machines with a centre shaft rather than rollers, the drum turns on a bearing at the back. This is the noise that starts as a hum you barely notice and finishes as a rumble you can hear from another room. Everything that falls out of a pocket ends up here eventually. The Two Noises to Stop the Machine For

Most dryer noises are an appointment rather than an emergency. Two are not.

Metal scraping metal. If the sound changes when you press on the cabinet, the drum is contacting something it should not. Every minute of that scores the drum surface, and a scored drum snags and marks clothing permanently.

A buzz with no rotation. The motor is trying to turn something that will not move. Repeated attempts cook the motor windings, which converts an inexpensive mechanical fault into a motor replacement. Switch it off at the wall and book it.

Why Dryers Get Noisier With Age

A dryer is a heavy steel drum turning on small parts, and every one of those parts is designed to wear. That is not a defect: the rollers, glides, belt and pulley are the sacrificial components that keep the drum off the metal around it. The question is never whether they wear but whether they are replaced before they take something else with them.

Heat accelerates all of it. Every cycle takes the interior to well above room temperature and back, and that cycling drives grease out of bearings and hardens felt glides until they crumble. Lint makes it worse: what escapes the screen settles on the pulley, the motor and the blower, where it holds heat against parts that are trying to shed it. A dryer that has never been opened and vacuumed internally is running its bearings warmer than the design intended, which is why a machine on a long, poorly maintained duct gets noisy years earlier than the same model on a short metal run.
