Microwave Repair Near You

Microwaves do not get their own page per town, and that is deliberate: a countertop unit is rarely worth a service call, so the work we actually do is on built-in and over-the-range units, usually alongside the oven or the range in the same kitchen. Below is where to start. The nine metro pages carry scheduling and coverage for the wider area; the city pages list every appliance we repair in that city, microwaves included. A microwave stores a lethal charge in its high-voltage capacitor even unplugged, so this is never a DIY job.

Microwaves are the one appliance where the honest answer is often do not repair it. A countertop unit costs less than a service call, so the work worth doing is on built-in and over-the-range models, where replacing means a cabinet cut-out, a vent connection and an installation. The diagnostic is $99 and is waived when you approve the repair, every job carries a 90-day parts-and-labour warranty, and we work ten metro areas. How microwaves actually fail

The reason this is never a do-it-yourself job is the high-voltage capacitor. It holds a lethal charge after the machine is unplugged, and it holds it for a long time. That single component is why microwave repair is a trained trade rather than a weekend project, and why we will not talk anybody through opening one.

The common faults split cleanly. Runs but food stays cold is the high-voltage side: magnetron, diode or capacitor. Sparking inside is the waveguide cover, a burnt rack support or bare metal where the interior coating has worn. Dead panel or will not start is the door interlock system, the membrane or the board, and the door interlocks are a safety circuit rather than a switch.

What microwave repair usually involves

We do not publish a part-by-part price list for microwaves, because we do not do enough of them to have honest medians and we would rather say that than invent a table. A built-in or over-the-range repair is quoted in writing at the diagnostic, before any work starts.

Check these before you book

Each of these costs nothing and each one resolves a real share of the calls we get. A technician arriving to do something you could have done in five minutes is a bad outcome for both of us.

Check the door closes square and latches fully

The interlock system will not let the machine run if the door is not properly closed, and a sagging door is a common cause of a microwave that suddenly will not start.

Look at the waveguide cover on the right-hand wall

A burnt or perforated cover causes arcing, and it is a cheap part rather than a dead microwave.

Check whether it is in demo mode

Showroom or demo mode makes a new machine light up, run the timer and produce no heat at all. It is free to switch off and it is a real cause.

When replacing beats repairing

We say this plainly because it saves people money: if you can carry it, replace it. A countertop microwave is not worth a service call. If it is built into cabinetry or mounted over the range, repair almost always wins, because replacing it means matching a trim kit, cutting or adapting a cabinet and reconnecting a vent. If you want to run the numbers yourself first, the repair-vs-replace calculator and the appliance lifespan database are the two pages worth ten minutes.

Built-in and over-the-range, and what replacing really costs

The reason repair wins on a built-in unit is not the price of the part, it is the price of everything around it. A microwave built into cabinetry is sized to a trim kit, and trim kits are model-specific, so a replacement that is a quarter-inch different means either a visible gap or a cabinet modification. An over-the-range unit adds a vent connection and a mounting plate to the same problem. That is why a $250 repair regularly beats a $500 appliance that needs a joiner to fit it.

Over-the-range units also live in the worst spot in the kitchen. They sit directly above a heat source, they carry the cooktop extraction, and the grease that goes through the filter ends up in the fan housing and on the control board. Cleaning the filter is a five-minute job that materially extends the life of the unit, and almost nobody does it.

We work on all major brands, including Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE, Bosch, Frigidaire, KitchenAid, Maytag and Panasonic, plus premium built-in lines. The one thing we will not do is repair a countertop microwave, because the service call is more than the appliance is worth and saying so is more useful than taking the money.

Before booking, it is worth knowing which side of the line your machine falls on: microwave repair cost and when it is worth fixing.

If the machine runs but leaves the food cold, the fault is in the high-voltage circuit and the cabinet must stay shut: microwave not heating.

No display and no light at all? Start at the outlet and the breaker: microwave stopped working.

Frequently asked questions

Is a microwave worth repairing?
If you can carry it, no. A countertop microwave costs less than a service call, so replacing it is the sensible answer. If it is built into cabinetry or mounted over the range, repair almost always wins, because replacement means matching a trim kit, adapting the cabinet and reconnecting the vent.
Why does my microwave run but not heat?
The high-voltage side has failed, usually the magnetron, the diode or the capacitor. Before assuming that, check whether the unit is in demo or showroom mode, which produces exactly the same behaviour and costs nothing to switch off.
Is it safe to open a microwave myself?
No. The high-voltage capacitor holds a lethal charge after the machine is unplugged and holds it for a long time. This is the one appliance where we will not talk anybody through the inside, and it is why microwave work is a trained trade.
What causes sparking inside a microwave?
Usually the waveguide cover on the side wall, a burnt metal rack support, or interior coating that has worn through to bare metal. All three are repairable and none of them are reasons to scrap a built-in unit.
Do you repair over-the-range microwaves?
Yes, and they are the most common microwave job we do, along with built-in units. The vent connection and the mounting are part of the work rather than an extra.
Do you replace built-in microwaves as well as repair them?
Where a built-in unit is beyond economic repair we will tell you and explain what replacing involves, including trim kit and cabinet fit, so you are not left with a hole in the cabinetry and a unit that does not match.
