Why the First Question Here Is the Freezer, Not the Valve
Two completely different faults produce the same complaint. In the first, the ice maker cannot get enough water: the fill valve is restricted, the fill tube has iced over, or the supply line is pinched or blocked. In the second, the ice maker is getting all the water it needs and the freezer simply is not cold enough to freeze it on schedule. From the kitchen these look identical. You open the bin and there is no ice, or a handful of small cubes where there used to be a full tray.
Which of the two is more likely depends heavily on where you live, and this is one of the places in Broward where geography genuinely changes the answer. In Coral Springs the municipal supply runs about 298 mg/L, roughly 17.4 grains per gallon, and on water that hard the fill path is the first thing in the whole kitchen to narrow. We wrote a page about it because the pattern there is that consistent. Its refrigeration median sits at $376, well above the $284 we see here, and compound deposit-heavy work is a large part of why.
We are not going to make the reverse claim about Plantation, because we do not have a documented hardness figure for this city and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What we can tell you is what our own book shows. Plantation refrigeration comes in $92 under Coral Springs on a comparable number of jobs, and the local repairs cluster in single-component work rather than in the compound jobs that deposit produces. That is not proof about the water. It is a strong hint that the fill path is not the dominant failure here, and it means the first thing worth ruling out is the freezer.
So the check comes first, before anybody orders anything. Put a cheap thermometer in the freezer and leave it overnight. A freezer at or near 0 F is doing its job, and a no-ice fault above a properly cold freezer points at the module, the fill valve, the fill tube or the arm. A freezer sitting at 10 or 15 degrees is not a freezer with an ice maker problem, it is a refrigerator with a cooling problem, and the ice maker is simply the first place you noticed. Fitting a new module into that machine gets you a new module and still no ice, which is the single most common way money gets wasted on this fault.

What Ice Maker Repair Costs Here
Ice maker work is booked and priced inside our refrigeration category, because on most calls the ice maker is part of the refrigerator rather than a separate machine. These are our own completed jobs and every figure is the full ticket: part, labour and the service call together.
| Where | Median repair | Range or middle half | Jobs behind it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plantation | $284 | $255 to $486 | 8 with a part replaced |
| Coral Springs, 17.4 grains of hardness | $376 | $175 to $488 | 11 with a part replaced |
| South Florida service area | $375 | middle half $255 to $453 | 141 with a part replaced |
| Company-wide | $375 | middle half $255 to $473 | 229 with a part replaced |
| Diagnostic visit | $99 | flat | applied to the repair when you approve it |
We do not publish an ice-maker-only median anywhere, because our standalone ice machine sample is too small to build an honest figure on and rounding one up would help nobody. The refrigeration category is the right frame, and within it Plantation is the cheapest city in our South Florida book at $284 against a regional $375. Five of the eight local repairs landed at $288 or under, which is single-component work.
Match the Symptom to the Likely Cause
| What you see | Most likely cause here | What helps before the visit |
|---|---|---|
| No ice, freezer not holding near 0 F | A refrigeration fault, not an ice maker fault | Leave a thermometer in the freezer overnight |
| No ice, freezer properly cold | Module, fill valve, frozen fill tube or the arm | Check the arm is down and not caught on the bin |
| Cubes small or hollow | Not enough water reaching the mould in the fill window | Check the line behind the fridge is not pinched |
| Ice in the bin but none comes out of the door | Auger motor, dispenser flap or the chute iced over | Empty the bin, look for a fused block at the auger |
| Cubes fused into one solid block | Production too slow, so cubes sit and bond | Empty the bin and time how fast it refills |
| Water pooling under the freezer or in the door | Fill tube icing and overflowing, or a leaking valve | Switch the ice maker off at the arm and call |
| Ice tastes or smells wrong | Filter overdue, or ice absorbing odours while sitting | Check the filter date, empty the bin |
| Garage or outdoor unit slows every summer | Condenser cannot shed heat into hot ambient air | Clear the grille, three inches clearance |
The Module, the Fill Tube and the Arm
A refrigerator ice maker is a simpler device than most people expect, and its three common failures are worth knowing by name because they behave differently. The module is the plastic housing at the side of the unit containing the motor, the gears, the thermostat that decides when the ice is frozen and the ejector arms that push it out. When the module fails you typically get nothing at all, or a machine that fills but never ejects, and it is replaced as an assembly rather than repaired.
The fill tube is the short plastic tube that delivers water from the valve into the mould. It sits in freezing air, and if a fill is even slightly late or slightly over-volume, water can freeze in the tube itself. Once that happens the next fill has nowhere to go and finds its way out over the front, which is the fault behind most of the water we are called to find under a freezer drawer. It is a cheap thing to clear and a cheap thing to prevent, but left alone it repeats every few weeks.
The arm, or the sensor on newer designs, is the part that tells the machine the bin is full. It is also the part most often responsible for a call that turns out to require no repair at all. A bail arm knocked upward while someone was reaching past it, or resting on a bag of frozen food that has shifted, tells the ice maker to stop, and it stops. Before booking, look at whether the arm is fully down and free to move. It takes ten seconds and it is the one check on this page that occasionally saves you the whole visit.
When It Is Not the Ice Maker at All
A large share of the ice complaints we take on modern refrigerators are not about ice production. They are about ice delivery, which is a separate mechanism on the door side and fails in its own way. If you can open the freezer and find plenty of cubes in the bin but nothing comes out when you press the dispenser, the ice maker is working perfectly and something between the bin and the chute is not.
Three things account for most of it. The auger motor, which turns the spiral that feeds cubes toward the chute, can fail outright or struggle against a block of fused ice. The dispenser flap at the top of the chute can stop sealing, and a flap that stays slightly open lets warm humid kitchen air into the chute, which is exactly how the chute fills with a plug of frost. And the bin itself can hold a fused mass, usually because production has been slow for weeks and cubes sat long enough to bond, which is a symptom pointing back at the production side after all.
The useful home test is to empty the bin completely, break up anything solid, put it back and use the dispenser. If it works normally after that, you had a fusion problem and the question becomes why production slowed. If it still will not dispense with a bin of loose cubes, the auger, the flap or the chute is the fault, and those are routine repairs at the lower end of our local range. Either way it is worth telling us which of the two you observed, because it decides where the technician starts.
One last note for the larger properties on the western side of the city, where a second refrigerator in the garage or a dedicated undercounter machine is common. Those units live in ambient heat their condensers were not designed around, and slow ice production in July on a garage unit is usually the room rather than the machine. Three inches of clearance, clear coils and shade address more of those calls than any part does.
