A refrigerator ice maker works on a cycle. Now restrict the supply. Less water arrives in the same number of seconds, the mold is only partly filled, and the machine freezes and ejects exactly what it was given. That is precisely the description people bring us: cubes that are thin, half-height, hollow in the middle, crescent-shaped rather than full, or simply not as many as there used to be. And because scale accumulates gradually, the decline happens over years and gets normalised until somebody visits and remarks on the ice.

A second family of complaints has nothing to do with water. An ice maker needs the freezer to be genuinely cold, and it will not cycle properly if it is not.

The mold has to reach a set temperature before the harvest is triggered. If the freezer is running warm, at 15 or 20 degrees Fahrenheit rather than zero, the cycle either takes far too long or never completes, so production collapses or stops entirely with no fault in the ice maker at all. This is the reason we always measure the freezer temperature with a probe on an ice call rather than reading the display panel.

A standalone ice machine is a different appliance from the ice maker inside a refrigerator, and in this city a lot of them live in exactly the wrong place for their own health.
