Five Stages, and Your Symptom Names the One That Failed

An ice maker is a small machine with a fixed routine, and once you know the routine, the thing you are seeing usually points straight at the stage that has stopped working. Here is the whole cycle.

Fill. The module signals a valve at the back of the refrigerator to open for a few seconds, and water travels along a supply line, through the filter, and out of a small fill tube into the mould. Everything about this stage is timed rather than measured: the machine opens the valve for a fixed number of seconds and assumes the right amount arrived. That is why anything restricting flow, a scaled valve, a filter past its interval, a kinked line, produces small or hollow cubes rather than an error. Less water arrived in the same seconds.

Freeze. The mould sits in freezer air and the water freezes solid. A thermostat or sensor in the module watches for the mould reaching the temperature that means the ice is ready. If the freezer is not holding near 0 F, this stage takes far too long or never completes, and the machine simply waits. That is why a warm freezer looks exactly like a dead ice maker from the kitchen.

Harvest. A small heater under the mould warms it very slightly, just enough to release the ice from the metal. This is the stage people never think about, and it is why an ice maker sometimes has a tray of solid ice sitting in it and still delivers nothing.

The overnight test that separates two stages. A restricted fill and a freezer that is not cold enough produce identical no-ice complaints and lead to completely different repairs. Most household in-freezer modules complete a cycle every hour and a half to two hours, dropping a batch of eight to ten cubes each time, which works out at a few pounds a day. That is not fast. A party, a hot week or a house full of teenagers will empty the bin faster than any domestic ice maker can refill it, and no repair changes that.

So the useful measurement is not how much ice is in the bin, it is how fast the bin refills. Empty it completely, note the time, and look again after four hours. If a couple of batches have arrived, the machine is working and the issue is capacity against demand. If nothing has arrived at all, you have a genuine fault and now you know it rather than suspecting it.

Two things legitimately slow production without anything being broken. A freezer that is well stocked and rarely opened runs colder and more stably than one opened constantly, so a busy household’s ice maker genuinely produces less. And an under-filled freezer holds less cold mass, so it recovers more slowly every time the door opens. Neither is a fault, both are worth knowing before booking a visit.

Empty the bin completely. Take it out, tip everything into the sink, and check for a fused mass at the auger. A solid block will jam a dispenser and can damage the auger motor, and it also stops you seeing whether new ice is arriving.

Check the filter date. If it is past its interval, change it, then flush a few litres through the dispenser to clear carbon fines before they reach the fill valve. Then wait, because a filter change interrupts the water path and the machine needs time.

Confirm the freezer temperature. Thermometer, overnight, near 0 F. This is the step people skip and it is the one that most often changes the answer.
