The Refrigerator Is Standing on Its Own Water Line

Boca del Mar is a master-planned community of more than ninety subdivisions across upwards of 2,300 acres, built out decades ago, and its kitchens were drawn around the refrigerators of their day. Those appliances were shallower than the ones sold now.

A water line is not designed to be folded. Three things follow.

It restricts the fill. An ice maker fills for a fixed number of seconds rather than to a level, so anything that reduces flow gives you less water per batch. The Valve at the Other End

The line has to start somewhere, and in this housing stock that tap is worth understanding, because it is the second most common thing we find.

The saddle valve. Piercing or saddle valves clamp onto a pipe and drive a small needle through it to make the tap. They were the quick way to feed a refrigerator for decades and plenty are still in service here. Their weakness is well documented: they weep years later, and once the needle has corroded they often cannot be closed fully. If you go to shut the water to your ice maker and the valve turns but the water does not stop, that is a saddle valve and it should be replaced with a proper tee and shut-off.

A valve left partly open. Somebody closed it during other work and reopened it partway. That produces thin cubes rather than no ice, which is why it goes unnoticed for months. It is free to correct and it is the first thing we check.

A valve that has seized. Twenty years untouched in this climate and it will not turn when you need it to. That is not a fault today, it is a problem on the day something leaks, so it is worth exercising once a year.

Attached Housing and the Water Nobody Owns

A great deal of Boca del Mar is condominium, villa and townhouse, and that changes what an ice maker leak means.

In a detached house, a split supply line is a wet floor and some cabinetry. In an attached or stacked home it reaches a neighbour, and the claim is against you.

Two things are worth doing, and both are cheap.

Replace old tubing with braided stainless. Grey or clear plastic line hardens with age and splits, usually at a fitting or a bend. Braided stainless is inexpensive and it is the best improvement available to this installation.

Close the valve whenever the home will be empty. Ten seconds, and in a community with a large seasonal population homes here stand empty for months at a time. A weep that would be a mop on a Tuesday is a ceiling downstairs in March.

And know where your shut-off is before you need it. In many attached homes the valve serving your unit sits in a service cupboard rather than inside the home, sometimes serving several units, which means the association operates it rather than you.

The Frozen Fill Tube, and Why It Looks Like a Burst Line

Water reaches the ice maker through a small tube ending just above the mould, and each cycle delivers a measured shot into it. If the freezer runs colder than it needs to, or the fill valve seeps slightly between cycles, water sits in the end of that tube and freezes.

Once it is plugged the next fill has nowhere to go, so it backs up and overflows. What you find is a spike or a sheet of ice growing out of the back wall of the freezer, sometimes running down into the compartment below. It looks like a serious leak and it is a plug of ice in a quarter-inch tube.

Two causes. A freezer set too cold, which is the common one: zero degrees Fahrenheit is correct and it makes ice perfectly well, while minus five keeps the fill tube below freezing between fills. Or a weeping inlet valve, which keeps the tube permanently wet.

Thawing the tube fixes today. Setting the freezer to zero and dealing with the valve is what stops it returning.

Fused Cubes, Which Are Not a Fault

Warm air holds far more water vapour than cold air, so every time a freezer door opens in a Florida kitchen a load of moisture comes in and freezes on the first cold surface it meets. Exposed cubes in an open bin are exactly that surface: cold and with an enormous amount of area for their volume.

Each opening adds a thin film of frost, and after a week or two those films bridge the cubes into one solid mass. The dispenser then jams or grinds, and people conclude the ice maker has failed.

It has not. Use the ice, because a bin that turns over does not fuse. Check the freezer door seal closes flat, since a hardened gasket admits humid air continuously rather than only when you open the door. And where a bin has already fused, empty it and let it warm to room temperature so all the bridging frost melts rather than just the surface, then dry it and put it back. Chipping at the block leaves the frost that caused it and it fuses again within days.
