Ice Maker Repair in South Venice, FL
Same-day ice maker repair across South Venice and South Venice Beach, ZIP code 34293, from South Venice Boulevard to Alligator Drive and Lemon Bay Drive.
An ice maker is the one part of a refrigerator that drinks the water of the house, and in South Venice that water is frequently straight from a private well. Untreated well water here carries dissolved minerals that scale the mould and the fill valve screens, dissolved iron that discolours cubes and restricts flow, and often hydrogen sulfide that makes ice taste of rotten egg. All three look like a failing ice maker and none of them is. That is why we check the valve, the filter and the supply before quoting the module, which is the part that costs three times as much. Most South Venice ice maker repairs run $130 to $370, and the $99 diagnostic is waived when you approve the repair. Call (239) 350-4195.
- Diagnostic: $99, waived when you approve the repair. Most ice maker repairs $130 to $370.
- Speed: same-day if you call before noon Monday to Friday, next day as the fallback, plus Saturday slots.
- Coverage: ZIP code 34293, all of South Venice and South Venice Beach.
- Free first checks: the fill arm down, the supply valve fully open, and the filter under six months old.
- On a well: the fill valve at $130 to $280 is the usual answer, not the assembly at $220 to $430.
- Taste: a sulfur smell is the water, not the appliance, and a fridge filter will not remove it.
No ice, thin cubes or a sulfur taste?

Three Things in Well Water and What Each Does to Ice
On a utility you get an annual water quality report whether you read it or not. On a private well nobody sends you anything, and the water reaching the appliance is whatever the aquifer under your particular lot is doing. Three components matter here and they produce three different complaints.
Hardness scales the mould and the valve. Dissolved calcium and magnesium come out of solution wherever water sits or freezes, so they build up in the ice mould and in the fine mesh screens inside the fill valve. Scale in the mould means cubes stick and release badly, so the harvest cycle strains and sometimes fails to eject at all. Scale in the valve screens restricts the flow, and because an ice maker fills for a fixed number of seconds rather than to a level, less flow means less water per batch and thinner cubes.
Iron discolours and restricts. Dissolved iron is common in wells across rural parts of the county. It builds a soft orange deposit in the same screens with the same restricting effect, and it tints the ice, which people find far more alarming than it is.
Hydrogen sulfide makes it taste of the well. The rotten egg smell. It is dissolved gas, and it carries straight through into the ice, which then flavours every drink it goes into. It is also mildly corrosive to copper and to some rubber over years.
The important consequence is the diagnostic order. On well water the restriction is upstream of the ice maker far more often than the ice maker is at fault, so we check the supply valve, the filter, the line and the fill valve before we look at the module. A fill valve is $130 to $280. A complete assembly is $220 to $430. Fitting the second when the first was the problem is the most expensive avoidable mistake on this appliance and it happens here regularly.
The Free Checks, Before You Spend Anything
Four things, none of which needs a tool, and between them they account for a real share of the no-ice calls we take here.
The fill arm or paddle. Most ice makers have a wire arm or a paddle that senses when the bin is full and switches production off. If it is caught in the up position, or a bag of frozen food has pushed it up, the appliance believes the bin is full and stops. It is the single most common reason for no ice and it costs nothing.
The supply valve. Behind the refrigerator or under the sink where the line taps off. It gets closed during other work and not reopened, and it gets partly closed by somebody who meant to be careful. A partly open valve gives you thin cubes rather than no ice, which is why it is easy to miss.
The filter age. Six months is the interval and on well water it can be less. A clogged filter restricts flow enough to shrink the cubes noticeably, and it is the cheapest thing on this page.
The freezer temperature. Zero degrees Fahrenheit is correct. Colder does not make ice faster and it causes the frozen fill tube described below.
The Frozen Fill Tube, and Why It Looks Like a Burst Line
Water reaches the ice maker through a small tube ending just above the mould, and each cycle delivers a measured shot into it. If the freezer runs colder than it needs to, or the fill valve seeps slightly between cycles, water sits in the end of that tube and freezes.
Once the tube is plugged the next fill has nowhere to go, so it backs up and overflows. What you find is a spike or a sheet of ice growing out from the back wall of the freezer, sometimes running down into the compartment below. It looks like a serious leak and it is a plug of ice in a quarter-inch tube.
Two causes and both are fixable. A freezer set too cold, which is the common one, and a weeping inlet valve, which keeps the tube permanently wet. On well water the seeping valve is more likely than elsewhere, because scale and iron on a valve seat are exactly what stops it closing cleanly.
Thawing the tube fixes today. Setting the freezer to zero and dealing with the valve is what stops it returning.
Ice Makers Outside the Kitchen
South Venice is a deed restriction free community, so nothing here prevents a second refrigerator or a standalone ice machine living in a garage, carport, shed or on a lanai. That is genuinely convenient in a boating household, and it comes with two specific behaviours worth knowing.
Ice production falls as ambient temperature rises. An ice maker rejects heat into the same air the refrigerator does, and a closed shed in August is at or beyond the top of the range these appliances are designed for. Production slows, sometimes dramatically, and the appliance is not faulty. Clean coils, real clearance and a shadier position all help; a garage-ready or outdoor-rated appliance is the honest answer where outdoor ice matters year round.
In the cool months a second unit can stop making ice entirely. Many refrigerators run the whole cabinet from a thermostat in the fresh food compartment, so when the surrounding space gets genuinely cool that thermostat is satisfied, the compressor stops, and the freezer stops being cooled with it. No cooling, no ice. It catches people out because it happens when they expect the appliance to have an easy time.
A standalone outdoor ice machine is a different appliance from a refrigerator ice maker and it has its own requirements, including a drain. If yours sits on a lanai and the complaint is a smell rather than a shortage of ice, the drain and the reservoir are where to look, because a standing reservoir in this climate does exactly what you would expect.
The Supply Line, Which Is the Riskiest Thing About This Appliance
An ice maker adds a permanent water connection to an appliance that would otherwise have none, and that connection is worth understanding, because it is the part that can cost more than everything else on this page put together.
The line runs from a valve, usually behind the refrigerator or under the nearest sink, to the back of the appliance, and it holds mains pressure every second the valve is open. Three things go wrong with it.
The old plastic tubing. Cheap grey or clear plastic line was standard for years and it hardens with age, then splits, usually at a fitting or at a bend behind the appliance where nobody can see it. Braided stainless is the correct replacement, it costs very little, and it is the single best thing you can do to this installation.
The saddle valve. A piercing or saddle valve clamps onto a copper pipe and drives a small needle through it to make the tap. They were common because they were quick, and they are known for weeping years later and for being impossible to close fully once the needle has corroded. If you go to shut the water to your ice maker and the valve turns but the water does not stop, that is a saddle valve and it should be replaced with a proper tee and shut-off.
The kink behind the fridge. Push a refrigerator back hard against the wall and the line can be crushed against it. That restricts flow, which produces thin cubes, and it also work-hardens the tubing at that point until it eventually fails. Leaving a gentle loop rather than a tight bend is free.
The reason to care is the consequence. A refrigerator ice line failing while a house is occupied is a mopping job. The same failure in a house left empty for a month is a floor and cabinetry job, and a great many South Venice households are away for part of the year. Closing that valve when you leave takes ten seconds and it is the cheapest insurance in the kitchen.
Common Ice Maker Failures We Fix in South Venice
Thin, Hollow or Small Cubes
Water flow. Filter, supply valve, kinked line, then scale and iron in the fill valve screens.
Ice Tastes of Rotten Egg
Hydrogen sulfide in the well. A filtration question at the point of entry, and the appliance is fine.
Cubes Look Orange or Rusty
Dissolved iron. Alarming, not a fault, and not solved by the fridge filter.
No Ice at All, Everything Else Cold
Fill arm up, closed supply valve, then the fill valve, then the module. In that order.
Sheet of Ice Growing From the Back Wall
A frozen fill tube overflowing. Thaw it, set the freezer to zero, check the valve for seepage.
Makes Ice but Will Not Eject It
Scale in the mould making cubes stick, or the ejector motor and module.
Dispenser Jams or Grinds
Usually fused or bridged ice in the bin rather than the auger. Clear and thaw before condemning the motor.
Water on the Floor in Front of the Fridge
The supply line connection or the valve rather than the ice maker. Trace before ordering parts.
Production Drops Off in Summer
A hot room and a fridge working harder. Clean the condenser coils, and check the ambient if it is in an outbuilding.
Stopped After Work Was Done in the House
The supply valve left closed. Free, and worth checking first.
How We Diagnose a South Venice Ice Maker
We ask whether the house is on a well before anything else, because the answer changes the order of everything that follows.
Then the free checks: fill arm, supply valve, filter age, freezer temperature. Those four resolve a real share of calls without a part.
Then we look at the water rather than the electronics. Scale and iron in the fill valve screens, the state of the mould, and whether the valve is closing cleanly. On well water that is where the answer usually is, and the valve is a third the price of the assembly.
Only then the module, the ejector motor and the thermostat that decides when to harvest. And where the complaint is taste or colour rather than quantity, we will tell you plainly that it is the water, because selling a module for a sulfur smell would be selling a part that cannot help.
When It Is Not Worth Repairing
There is a third option on this appliance that does not exist on any other, and it is worth putting on the table.
If the refrigerator is fifteen years old and the fault is a complete assembly at $220 to $430, you are spending real money on a component that provides a convenience. You can switch the ice maker off, close its supply valve, remove the bin and use the reclaimed freezer space, and make ice in trays. On untreated well water with a sulfur taste, plenty of households here do exactly that and use bottled or filtered water for the trays, which solves the taste problem the appliance never could.
Two situations where that is the sensible answer. Where the rest of the refrigerator is near the end of its life, since federal appliance data puts a fridge’s typical service life at around fourteen years. And where the ice maker has already been repaired once, because a second failure on the same water usually means the water is the cause and the new part will go the same way.
Where the appliance is sound and reasonably young, repair it. A $130 valve or a $160 module on an eight-year-old refrigerator is straightforward value, and the assembly is the only part on this list that ever approaches the replace-it line.

Getting More Years Out of an Ice Maker Here
Have the well tested. Hardness, iron and sulfide are the three numbers that decide what this appliance is up against, and nobody else is going to measure them for you.
Set the freezer to 0 degrees Fahrenheit and leave it there, because colder does not make ice faster and it freezes fill tubes.
Change the filter every six months, and sooner on well water where it is catching sediment a utility would have removed.
Use the ice rather than letting it sit, because ice that sits absorbs freezer odours and bridges into a block.
Clean the condenser coils twice a year, four times in a carport or shed, since an appliance that cannot shed heat makes less ice long before it fails at anything else.
And switch the ice maker off and close its valve whenever the house is empty for more than a couple of weeks.
