Thin Ice Is a Water Problem, Not an Ice Maker Problem
This is the most useful thing on the page and it saves people from paying for the wrong part.
A refrigerator ice maker works on a cycle. The mold reaches a set temperature, a switch or sensor confirms the previous batch has frozen, the harvest mechanism ejects the cubes, and then the water inlet valve opens for a fixed number of seconds to refill the mold. That fill is timed. There is no float, no level sensor and no feedback: the machine assumes that opening the valve for seven or eight seconds delivers the right amount of water, because that is what it does when the supply is healthy.
Now restrict the supply. Less water arrives in the same number of seconds, the mold is only partly filled, and the machine freezes and ejects exactly what it was given. That is precisely the description people bring us: cubes that are thin, half-height, hollow in the middle, crescent-shaped rather than full, or simply fewer than there used to be. Because the restriction builds gradually, the decline happens over a couple of years and gets normalised until somebody visits and remarks on the ice.
On a Spring Hill well the restriction is close to inevitable. - The supply line and shut-off. A quarter-turn valve left only partly open, or a plastic line kinked behind the fridge when it was last moved.
- The fill tube. Frozen shut, or narrowed by iron deposit, with a specific look: no ice plus a lump of ice at the back of the mold.
- The well itself. A waterlogged pressure tank makes the pump short cycle, so house pressure surges and dips and a timed fill gets less than it should.
Iron and Sulfur in the Ice
Hardness is only part of a Spring Hill well. Two more components turn up directly in the ice, and neither is a mechanical fault.
Iron, commonly half a part per million to five. Dissolved iron is invisible at the tap and oxidises when it meets air, so it precipitates out as rust wherever the water slows down or stands. In an ice system that means orange deposits in the inlet valve, along the supply line, in the fill tube and around the mold, and it means a filter that clogs far faster than its rating. It can also put a faint metallic taste into the ice and, in bad cases, visible flecks.
Hydrogen sulfide, commonly a third of a part per million to two. This is the rotten egg smell, usually worst first thing in the morning after the water has stood still overnight. Ice is porous and takes up whatever is in the water, so on an untreated sulfur well the ice can carry the smell even when every part of the machine is working perfectly. People replace ice makers over this, and it changes nothing, because the ice maker is faithfully freezing the water it is given.
Both are water problems with water answers: an iron filter and appropriate treatment for sulfur, ahead of the refrigerator rather than inside it. What we can do is clear the deposits out of the valve, the line and the fill tube so the machine fills properly again, and tell you honestly which part of the complaint a repair will and will not fix.
When the Freezer Is the Reason There Is No Ice
A second family of complaints has nothing to do with water. An ice maker needs the freezer to be genuinely cold, and it will not cycle properly if it is not.
The mold has to reach a set temperature before the harvest is triggered. If the freezer is running warm, at 15 or 20 degrees Fahrenheit rather than zero, the cycle either takes far too long or never completes, so production collapses or stops entirely with no fault in the ice maker at all. That is why we measure the freezer temperature with a probe on every ice call rather than reading the panel.
A freezer running warm here comes back to the same short list as any cooling complaint: a condenser coil packed with dust, a condenser or evaporator fan motor that has stopped, a defrost fault letting frost block the airflow, or a door gasket letting warm humid air in continuously. Two Spring Hill specifics sit on top of that. A refrigerator wedged into a 1960s or 1970s alcove cannot get airflow across its condenser, so it struggles in August. These machines circulate water over a chilled plate, which means they concentrate whatever is in the water as they work. At 18 to 25 grains per gallon that makes a descale genuine scheduled maintenance every couple of months, and a machine that has never had one produces cloudy, soft, fast-melting ice and eventually stops harvesting cleanly. Iron compounds that by staining the plate and the water system.
They are also air-cooled through a small condenser with a fan behind a front grille, which clogs with dust and lint and then gives slow production and small cubes. And the drain is a wear item: a slimed gravity drain or a failed drain pump is the usual reason there is water on the floor under one.

Getting More Years Out of an Ice Maker Here
If you are on a well, keep the treatment in service and check it on a schedule. Salt in the softener, backwash on the iron filter, nothing on bypass. That protects the ice system along with everything else in the house.
Change the refrigerator water filter more often than the label says. On untreated well water a filter rated for six months is frequently finished sooner, and a clogged filter is the cheapest cause of thin ice there is. Write the date on the new one.
Empty the bin every month or two and let the machine make a fresh batch, because ice that sits shrinks, fuses and takes up the smell of the freezer, which on sulfur water is worse than average.
