Three Free Checks Before You Book Anyone
One: the shut-off. Every ice maker has a way of telling itself to stop, either a wire bail arm that lifts when the bin is full, an infrared beam, or a switch on the control panel. A bail arm gets knocked up by a bag of frozen vegetables and stays there, and the household concludes the ice maker has died. If yours has an arm, make sure it is down. If it uses a beam, make sure nothing is standing in the way. If it has a switch, make sure the switch is on. This costs nothing and it is the single most common reason we are called out to a working ice maker.
Two: the water filter. Filters are rated in gallons and in months, and a busy household reaches the gallon figure long before the calendar one. A spent filter starves the ice maker before it noticeably slows the drinking water, so the ice is always the first symptom. Change it and note the date on the housing so you know next time.
Three: the fill tube. Water reaches the mould through a small tube at the back of the freezer compartment. If a few drops are left in it after a fill and the freezer runs very cold, they freeze, and the next fill meets a plug of ice and either backs up or never arrives. The tell is ice visible at the back of the compartment or spillage down the rear wall. A hair dryer on low, used briefly and carefully, clears it, but the reason it froze usually needs addressing too, which the next section covers.
The Freezer Is Too Cold, and That Is a Real Cause
People set freezers colder than necessary in the belief that colder is safer, and on an ice maker that backfires directly.
The target for a freezer is around zero degrees Fahrenheit. Pushed well below that, two things happen. The few drops left in the fill tube after each cycle freeze before the next fill arrives, which is the ice plug described above and the most common recurring complaint on a machine that is otherwise healthy. And the mould can freeze the water so hard that the harvest cycle struggles to release the cubes, producing jams and, on some designs, a stripped ejector.
Measure rather than trusting the display: a thermometer between packages overnight tells you what the compartment is actually doing, and a several-degree gap between the panel and reality is normal on an older machine. If it is running well below zero, bring it up and see whether the ice problem goes with it. That is a free fix and frequently the whole answer.
The opposite case exists and is worth ruling out. An ice maker will not harvest until the mould reaches its cut-in temperature, so a freezer running warm, a door left ajar, or a garage unit in a cold building where the compressor is not starting at all will simply never produce a cycle.
Small, Hollow or Slow Cubes
Cubes that have gradually got smaller, then hollow, then insufficient for a weekend of visitors are telling you about water rather than about the module. The gradual profile is itself the diagnosis: a failed part fails, while a restriction tightens over months.
Work through it in order. The filter first, as above. Then the inlet valve, which has a small orifice that narrows with deposit over years, so the machine takes less water per fill than it was designed for. Then the incoming pressure, which matters because refrigerator ice makers are designed around a minimum supply pressure, typically in the region of twenty to forty pounds per square inch depending on the model. A restricted supply line or a partially closed valve will produce exactly this symptom.
In older Roswell kitchens there is one specific cause worth naming. Where the refrigerator supply was taken off a pipe with a saddle valve, that fitting pierces the pipe with a small needle and it clogs with deposit over time. Built-In and Undercounter Ice Machines

Leaks and Water on the Floor

The most common is the fill tube plug described earlier: water arrives, meets ice, and overflows down the back wall of the freezer, eventually reaching the floor. Clearing the plug and correcting the freezer temperature deals with it.
Next is the supply line connection, and here the saddle valve is the usual suspect again. They weep slowly, often behind the machine where nothing is visible, and by the time anyone notices the floor has been damp for a long time.
Third is the inlet valve weeping past its seat, which gives fused cubes and water at the same time.

Dispenser Faults, Which Are Their Own Category
On a refrigerator that dispenses through the door, a good share of what gets reported as an ice maker fault is happening in the door rather than in the freezer.
The chute is the usual culprit. Ice fuses in it during periods of light use, and the flap at the bottom can freeze partly open, which lets warm room air into the chute and frosts the whole assembly. The symptom is a machine that is clearly making ice, because the bin has some in it, while nothing comes out at the door. Clearing the chute and then using the dispenser regularly is genuinely the fix.
The auger motor and the dispenser switch are the paid repairs behind the same symptom. A motor that hums without turning, or a paddle that produces no response at all, points at those, and both are ordinary parts.
Water dispensing has its own short list. Weak flow with normal ice usually means the filter, and no water at all with working ice points at the reservoir line in the door, which can freeze if the fridge compartment is running too cold. That is the same setting problem described earlier, arriving through a different door.
Ice Production Rates, and What Is Actually Normal
A number of the calls we take are not faults at all but expectations, and the arithmetic is worth knowing before booking anyone.
A typical refrigerator ice maker produces somewhere in the region of three to five pounds of ice in a day, in batches of eight to ten cubes, with each batch taking roughly ninety minutes to two hours to freeze and harvest. That is ample for ordinary use and it is not ample for entertaining. A household filling glasses for a dozen people will empty the bin faster than the machine can refill it, and no repair changes that, because the limit is the freezing time rather than a component.
Two things do slow production legitimately and are worth checking against that baseline. A freezer that is opened frequently loses cold air and lengthens each cycle. And a refrigerator that is struggling generally, with dusty condenser coils or poor clearance, produces less ice as an early symptom, often before the food temperature is noticeably affected. If the ice slowed down and the appliance also seems to run longer than it used to, look at the coils before the ice maker.

The Module Itself: What Actually Fails
When the free checks are clear and the water side is healthy, the failures inside the ice maker are a short list.
The inlet valve. The most replaced part. It either passes too little water, giving thin cubes, or weeps past its seat, giving fused ones.
The mould thermostat or sensor. This tells the module when the cubes are frozen enough to harvest. When it fails the machine either never harvests or harvests too early and dumps slush into the bin.
The ejector motor and gears. The mechanism that turns the arm and pushes the cubes out. Gears strip, usually after a period of jamming caused by something else, which is why we look for the underlying cause rather than just fitting the part.
The mould heater. A small heater warms the mould briefly to release the cubes. If it fails they stay stuck and the ejector strains against them.
The whole module. On many designs these parts are not sold separately, so the repair is a complete assembly. That is a clean job and it is why ice maker repairs cluster in the middle of the price range rather than the bottom.
Taste, Smell and Old Ice
Ice that tastes wrong is almost never a machine fault, and people replace filters repeatedly without addressing the actual cause.
