Why Ice Fails First on a Well
This goes first because it is the answer to the majority of Brooksville ice complaints, and because it is not what people expect to hear.
Consider the water path in an ice maker. A quarter-inch supply line reaches a solenoid valve whose metering port is smaller still. From there a fill tube, often narrower than a pencil, carries a measured shot of water into the mould. That whole path is designed to deliver a precise volume in a fixed number of seconds, because that is how the machine knows how much water it has put in a cube.

Iron, Sulfide and the Ice That Tastes Wrong
Hardness changes the size of the cube. The other two constituents change what it is like to put in a drink, and neither is an appliance fault.
Iron. Commonly reported in this county at 0.5 to 5 parts per million. Iron in water gives ice a faint rust or metallic colour, sometimes visible only when several cubes sit together in a glass, and it leaves orange-brown staining in the ice bin and on the dispenser chute over time. It also stains laundry and the inside of a dishwasher, so if you are seeing it in the ice you will be seeing it elsewhere.
Hydrogen sulfide. Commonly reported at 0.3 to 2 parts per million, and it is the source of the rotten-egg or sulfur smell. It carries into ice, and because ice sits in an enclosed bin in a freezer full of food, the smell concentrates and transfers. People clean the bin, which helps for a week, and conclude something is rotting in the freezer.
There is a hard truth about refrigerator water filters and well water. That filter is designed to improve taste and remove particulates and chlorine from municipal water. It is not a well-water treatment system. It will take the edge off a sulfide smell for a while and then load up, and on a well it clogs long before the six months printed on the box. A clogged filter then starves the ice maker, which produces the thin-cube symptom all over again from a completely different cause.
The Water Line Somebody Added Later
This is the second Brooksville-specific finding, and it applies in town as much as out of it.
No house in Brooksville was built with a water line to the refrigerator, because for most of this town’s history refrigerators did not take water. So on every property, that line is a retrofit, and how it was run decides how reliable it is.
In a house on a slab the line usually comes through a wall from under the sink. In a house standing on piers, the obvious route is down through the floor, across the crawlspace and up again behind the refrigerator, and that introduces several failure modes at once. The line can be crushed where it passes through the floor or where something was set down on it. It can be kinked at a tight turn behind the machine, which is by far the most common finding and happens every time the refrigerator is pushed back after cleaning. It can be knocked loose by anybody working under the house. Soft plastic tubing in a crawlspace is also of interest to rodents.
Then there is the connection at the other end. Many of these lines were tapped in with a saddle valve, a small fitting that clamps onto a pipe and pierces it. They are quick to install and they are notorious for weeping years later and for partially closing up, so a saddle valve is always on our list when a refrigerator has poor water flow with no other explanation.
One more, and it is genuinely seasonal. A crawlspace is not conditioned space. In a hard cold snap a water line running through it is exposed in a way that a line inside a wall is not, and a partially frozen line means no fill, which the machine reports as no ice.
When No Ice Is Really a Freezer Problem
An important diagnostic branch, because it sends the repair somewhere else entirely.
An ice maker only cycles when the mould gets cold enough. On most refrigerators a thermostat or sensor on the ice maker itself watches the mould and triggers the harvest when it reaches temperature. If the freezer is running warmer than it should, the mould never reaches that trigger, and the machine simply never harvests. No ice, no error, nothing broken in the ice maker.
So a no-ice complaint always makes us check the freezer temperature with our own thermometer rather than the display, because displays drift and a freezer sitting a few degrees warm is enough to stop ice production while keeping food acceptably frozen. If the freezer is warm, the fault is in the cooling system, the airflow or the door seal, and the ice maker is a symptom. The related and very common one is a frozen fill tube. Water is left in the tube after a fill, and if the fill was slightly too large, or the tube heater has failed, or the freezer runs colder than intended, that residue freezes and plugs the tube.
