Where the Decision Gets Harder
Two repairs are the ones worth thinking about rather than approving automatically.
The module or assembly, $180 to $400. On many machines the ice maker is sold as a complete unit rather than as individual parts, so a failed motor, a failed harvest heater or a stripped ejector all lead to the same replacement. On a refrigerator under about ten years old that is straightforward and we would do it. Past that, weigh it against how much ice the household actually uses, because the third option above costs nothing.
The auger motor, $150 to $320. On a through-the-door dispenser, the motor that turns the auger in the bin. It usually fails for a specific and preventable reason: ice left in the bin for a long time sublimates and refreezes into a solid block, and somebody forces the lever against it. There is one more thing worth knowing about older machines: on some designs the ice maker is fed by the same water valve as the door dispenser, and on others the valve is model-specific and no longer stocked. Parts availability decides more of these than price does, and we check it before quoting rather than after.
The Fused Block, and Why It Costs More Than It Should
This is worth its own section because it converts a free omission into the most expensive ice maker repair.
Ice sitting in a frost-free freezer does not simply wait. It sublimates, passing directly from solid to vapour in the dry moving air, so cubes shrink and their surfaces roughen. Then every defrost cycle warms the compartment slightly, the outer skin of each cube softens fractionally, the compartment cools again, and the softened surfaces freeze to whatever they are touching. Over weeks or months a bin of loose cubes becomes one solid mass.
On a through-the-door dispenser the auger is designed to turn through loose ice, and now it is sitting under a block. Somebody presses the lever, the motor stalls, and either its protection cuts out or it keeps pushing until the windings or the plastic drive coupling give way.
If you find a bin that will not pour, do not work the lever to see whether it frees itself, because that is exactly what destroys the motor. Take the bin out, empty it into a sink, let it thaw and dry, and put it back. In a household that gets through little ice, emptying the bin every few weeks prevents it entirely, and in a house that stands empty for part of the year, switching the maker off and emptying the bin is part of locking up.
