One Small Part, Three Different Failures

At the back of almost every refrigerator that makes ice there is a water inlet valve: a small brass or plastic body with an electrical coil on it, sitting where the house supply line meets the appliance. When the ice maker wants water, the control energises that coil for a fixed number of seconds and the valve opens. When the time is up it closes. That is the entire job.

Almost everything that goes wrong with ice production comes back to that valve, the filter in front of it, or the short tube after it. And the valve does not have one failure mode, it has three, which is why two households with the same part failing describe completely different problems.

Restricted. Mineral deposit or sediment narrows the orifice, so less water passes in the seconds the control allows. Nothing errors, because the machine has no way of measuring what actually arrived. The mould fills partly, and you get cubes that are small, then hollow, then barely formed. This is the slow one and it takes months.

Leaking through. The valve no longer seals fully when it closes, so a trickle continues between cycles. Water seeps into the mould, freezes where it lands, and the classic result is a sheet of ice under the ice maker, an overflowing mould, or water appearing under the freezer drawer. This one is often mistaken for a leaking supply line.

Electrically dead. The coil has failed and the valve never opens at all. The ice maker calls for water, nothing arrives, and the machine cycles with an empty mould producing nothing. From the kitchen this looks identical to a failed ice maker module, which is the single most common reason the wrong part gets fitted.

Two of those three are genuine valve replacements. The first, restriction, is sometimes the valve and sometimes the filter in front of it, and that distinction is worth checking before anybody orders anything, because one costs a service call and the other costs a filter.

Match the Symptom to the Failure Mode

Filter or Valve? Telling Them Apart

Restriction is the commonest of the three failures and the one where money most often gets spent in the wrong place, because an overdue filter and a narrowing valve produce identical symptoms: cubes that get smaller and then hollow.

The filter is the cheap possibility and it should always be eliminated first. Check the date. Most models specify six months, and the reason it is a time rather than a volume is that carbon capacity depletes whether you draw water or not, so a household that uses the dispenser rarely does not get a longer filter life. If yours is past its interval, change it, flush a few litres through the dispenser to clear carbon fines out of the new cartridge, and then give the machine a full twenty-four hours before judging it. Ice makers are slow to recover from any interruption to the water path.

If a fresh filter and a day of patience make no difference, the restriction is downstream of it, and that means the valve, the short fill tube, or the supply line between the tap and the appliance. Older installations sometimes use a saddle valve clamped onto a pipe, which is a fitting that both restricts and weeps as it ages, and where we find one we will say so, because replacing it with a proper quarter-turn shut-off removes a recurring problem and gives you a valve that actually closes when you need it to.

Two observations separate them, and both are things you can report when you book. If there is ice sitting in the mould but none reaching the bin, water is arriving and freezing correctly, so the valve is doing its job and the fault is in the harvest or eject stage, which is the module. If the mould is bone dry cycle after cycle, no water is arriving at all, and the valve, the fill tube or the supply is the place to look rather than the module.

The other thing worth ruling out first costs nothing: the bail arm. That wire arm on the side of the module tells the machine the bin is full, and it only has to be knocked upward while somebody reaches past it, or resting on a bag of frozen food that has shifted, for the ice maker to stop exactly as designed.
