An oven that will not heat, or that runs thirty degrees off what the dial says, is one of two very different jobs. On an electric oven it is nearly always an element or a sensor. On a gas oven it is nearly always the igniter, and the tell-tale is an oven that glows and clicks but never lights. The diagnostic is $99 and is waived when you approve the repair, every job carries a 90-day parts-and-labour warranty, and we work ten metro areas. Florida and general (863) 474-2970, Texas (281) 205-1474.
Gas ovens do not light with a spark. The igniter draws current and, when it gets hot enough, the safety valve opens and gas flows. As an igniter ages it still glows but no longer draws enough current to open that valve, so you get the glow, the smell of gas for a moment, and no flame. That is why a glowing igniter is not proof that the igniter is good, and why it is the single most replaced part on gas ranges.
Electric ovens are more direct. A bake or broil element that has burned through usually shows it, and a temperature sensor that has drifted produces an oven that heats but not to the right number. A thermometer on the middle rack at 350F for twenty minutes tells you which conversation you are having.
For the numbers behind these ranges, Neighborville’s own completed jobs are published in full in the oven repair cost database: 62 priced cooking-appliance repairs, median finished repair $363, and the price bands each kind of work falls into.
| Repair | Typical cost, parts and labour |
|---|---|
| Control board | $200 to $525 |
| Temperature sensor | $100 to $230 |
| Broil element | $120 to $240 |
| Bake element | $130 to $260 |
| Gas oven igniter | $150 to $325 |
| Gas safety valve | $150 to $320 |
| Surface burner igniter or switch | $90 to $200 |
| Surface element or burner switch | $90 to $200 |
Figures are the medians of the ranges already published on our nine metro oven pages, for parts and labour on a named repair. The $99 diagnostic sits outside them and comes off when you approve the work.
Each of these costs nothing and each one resolves a real share of the calls we get. A technician arriving to do something you could have done in five minutes is a bad outcome for both of us.
Set 350F, wait twenty minutes, read it. A swing of 25 to 30 degrees is normal on a domestic oven. Consistently 50 low is a sensor or an element.
A blister, a split or a bright burn mark means it has failed, and you have your answer before anybody arrives.
Spill residue blocking the ports causes a single burner that will not light, and clearing it is free.
| What you notice | Usual suspects, cheapest first |
|---|---|
| Gas oven glows and clicks but never lights | Igniter, almost always, even when it still glows |
| Electric oven does not heat at all | Bake element, then the thermal fuse, then the control board |
| Heats but the temperature is well off | Temperature sensor, then calibration, then the element |
| One surface burner will not light | Blocked burner port, then the surface igniter or switch |
| Touchpad dead or buttons unresponsive | Control board or membrane, and the price band is the widest on the appliance |
Ovens are usually worth fixing, because the expensive part of an oven is the cabinet and it does not fail. Elements, igniters, sensors, valves and switches are all straightforward. The exception is a control board on an older range, where the part can run past $500 and a new range starts to look sensible, and we will give you that comparison rather than a quote in isolation. If you want to run the numbers yourself first, the repair-vs-replace calculator and the appliance lifespan database are the two pages worth ten minutes.
Twenty-nine cities have their own oven page, written for that city rather than copied from a template. If your address is in one of them, start there.
Every city we cover is on the locations index, with Florida and Texas hubs. Not listed? Call anyway, we cover a wider area than we have pages for.
