An ice maker is a chain of narrow passages, and almost everything that goes wrong with one is a
restriction rather than a breakdown. A shut-off arm knocked up by a bag of frozen food, a filter past its gallons, a
fill tube frozen shut, an inlet valve scaled half closed: those four account for most of the calls we take, and two of

How ice makers actually fail
Split the appliance in two and the diagnosis gets much easier. There is a water side, which is an inlet valve with
an orifice about the width of a pin, a filter, a fill tube barely wider than a pencil, and on dispenser models a
reservoir and a line running through the door. And there is a harvest side, which is the mould, a small heater that
releases the cubes, a thermostat or sensor that decides when they are frozen, and an ejector motor with gears.
Water-side faults come on gradually. Cubes get smaller, then hollow, then the bin stops keeping up with a weekend
of visitors. Because it happens over months, almost nobody can say when it started, and that gradual profile is itself
the diagnosis. Harvest-side faults arrive suddenly: it worked yesterday and today the bin is empty, or the arm is
jammed against a slab of ice.
The practical consequence is that a machine which has been slowly declining does not need a new module. It needs
the restriction found, and replacing the module without finding it gives you a new module producing the same small
cubes.
Three checks before you book anyone
Each of these costs nothing and each one resolves a real share of the calls we get. A technician arriving to do
something you could have done in five minutes is a bad outcome for both of us.
Check the shut-off
Every ice maker has a way of telling itself to stop: a wire bail arm that lifts when the bin is full, an infrared
beam, or a switch on the panel. An arm gets knocked up by a bag of frozen vegetables and stays there. This is the
single most common reason we are called out to a perfectly healthy machine.
Change the water filter
Filters are rated in gallons as well as months, and a busy household reaches the gallon figure long before the
calendar one. A spent filter starves the ice maker before it noticeably slows the drinking water, so the ice is always
the first symptom. Write the date on the housing when you fit one.
Look for ice around the fill tube
Water reaches the mould through a small tube at the back of the freezer. If a few drops are left after each fill
and the freezer runs very cold, they freeze, and the next fill meets a plug. The tell is ice at the back of the
compartment or spillage down the rear wall.

The freezer temperature trap
People set freezers colder than necessary in the belief that colder is safer, and on an ice maker that backfires
directly. The target is around zero degrees Fahrenheit. Pushed well below that, the drops left in the fill tube after
each cycle freeze before the next fill arrives, which is the ice plug described above and the most common recurring
complaint on a machine that is otherwise healthy. The mould can also freeze the water hard enough that the harvest
cycle struggles to release the cubes, which produces jams and, on some designs, a stripped ejector.
Measure rather than trusting the display, which reports a setpoint or a sensor value that may itself have drifted.
A thermometer between packages overnight tells you what the compartment is actually doing, and a gap of several
degrees between the panel and reality is normal on an older machine. If it is running well below zero, bring it up and
see whether the ice problem goes with it. That is a free fix and it is frequently the whole answer.
The opposite case is worth ruling out too. An ice maker will not harvest until the mould reaches its cut-in
temperature, so a freezer running warm, a door left ajar, or a garage unit in a cold building where the compressor is
not starting at all will simply never produce a cycle.
What the water is doing to the machine
More ice maker faults trace back to water than to components, and three different things in it cause three
different symptoms.
Hardness deposits wherever water sits or evaporates, and inside an ice maker water sits and
evaporates constantly. The valve orifice narrows and the fill tube gradually closes, so the machine takes less water
per fill than it was designed for. That is the mechanism behind shrinking cubes.
Sediment blinds the filter early and can reach the valve, where it holds the seat slightly open.
That gives a slow weep between cycles, so the mould keeps topping up and the cubes fuse into a slab that jams the
harvest arm.
Iron and manganese stain rather than block. Discoloured cubes, an orange tint in the drip tray, a
tinted bin. The appliance is not deteriorating; it is showing you what is dissolved in the water. This is the one
where people replace a perfectly good refrigerator and get identical cubes from the new one.
The rule that follows: if the kettle and the shower head are scaling or staining too, treat the water rather than
replacing appliances one at a time. On a private well, treat the filter as a consumable on a shorter cycle than the
label states.
Refrigerator ice makers and dedicated machines are not the same appliance
A dedicated undercounter or standalone ice machine is not a bigger version of the thing in a refrigerator door. It
runs a large volume of water continuously through an evaporator and a reservoir, and it is designed on the assumption
that it will be cleaned on a schedule.
Manufacturers typically specify descaling and sanitising two to four times a year. A machine that has never had it
produces less ice, then cloudy or soft ice that will not release cleanly, then fails, and the household reads that as
the appliance wearing out. It is maintenance, not a repair, and it is the first thing we look at on a dedicated
machine that has slowed down.
Two more differences catch people out. These machines reject heat through a grille at the front or back, so built
into a cabinet run with the clearance obstructed they overheat and production collapses in summer. And they drain by
gravity or by a small pump, which in a fitted run is out of sight, so a blocked or badly sloped drain gives standing
water in the bin and eventually a wet cabinet base that nobody sees until the finish lifts.
Water where it should not be
Water appearing under or behind a refrigerator with an ice maker has a short list of sources, and in a kitchen with
wood flooring it is worth working through quickly.
The most common is the fill tube plug: water arrives, meets ice, and overflows down the back wall of the freezer,
eventually reaching the floor. Next is the supply line connection, and on older installations that usually means a
saddle valve, which pierces the pipe with a small needle, clogs with deposit and weeps as its seal ages. Replacing one
with a proper tee and a quarter-turn valve fixes both the flow and the leak risk in one job. Third is the inlet valve
weeping past its seat, which gives you fused cubes and water at the same time.
Fourth, and worth ruling out before assuming an ice maker fault at all, is a blocked defrost drain in the
refrigerator, which puts water under the crisper drawers and eventually on the floor. Different fault, same puddle.
Taste, smell and old ice
Ice that tastes wrong is almost never a machine fault, and people replace filters repeatedly without addressing the
cause. Ice absorbs odours readily, so a bin that has stood for months carries the smell of everything in the freezer
into every drink. Empty and wash the bin, then use the ice often enough that it turns over.
A stale or plastic taste after a period of disuse is the water that sat in the line and the reservoir rather than
the ice itself, and discarding the first two or three batches clears it. If the dispensed water tastes the same as the
ice, the filter or the supply is the place to look, since the ice maker is only freezing what it is given.
When an ice maker is not worth repairing
On many designs the individual parts inside the module are not sold separately, so the repair is a complete ice
maker assembly. That is a clean job and it is the reason ice maker repairs cluster in the middle of the price range
rather than the bottom. Where the assembly for an older model is genuinely no longer made, we would rather establish
that from the model number before the visit than after a diagnostic.
The other honest limit is a machine whose real problem is the refrigerator around it. If the appliance is failing
generally, with a blocked condenser or a sealed-system fault, reduced ice is an early symptom rather than the disease,
and money spent on the ice maker is money spent on the wrong thing.
Everything else is worth doing. Valves, thermostats, sensors, fill tubes, supply lines, auger motors and complete
modules are ordinary parts, and on a built-in or panelled appliance they are clearly worth fitting, because
replacement there means cabinetry rather than a delivery.
Maintenance that keeps an ice maker alive
Change the water filter on the shorter of its two ratings and write the date on the housing. Keep the freezer at
around zero rather than as cold as it will go. Empty and wash the bin occasionally, and use the ice rather than
letting it stand for months, because a machine that sits idle produces fused, stale cubes and a blocked chute.
Replace an old saddle valve with a proper tee. Descale a dedicated machine on its schedule. Check the grille and
clearance on a built-in unit before summer. And if the cubes have been getting smaller for months, treat that as a
restriction to be traced rather than a module to be replaced.

My ice maker stopped completely. What should I check first?
Three things, all free. Make sure the shut-off arm is down or that nothing blocks the sensor beam, because a bag of frozen food knocking the arm up is the single most common reason we are called to a working ice maker. Change the water filter if it is anywhere near its rating, since a busy household reaches the gallon figure long before the calendar one. Then look at the back of the freezer for ice around the fill tube, which is a plug stopping water from arriving.
The cubes have got smaller and hollow over the last year. Is the module failing?
That gradual profile points at restricted water rather than a failed part, because a component fails while a restriction tightens over months. Change the filter first, then have the inlet valve and the incoming pressure checked. Replacing the module without finding the restriction gives you a new module producing the same small cubes.
Why is our ice orange or brown?
Dissolved iron in the water, oxidising as the water sits and freezes. It is a water problem rather than an appliance problem, and the confirmation is that the toilet tank and the shower tile show the same colour. No repair changes it and neither does a new refrigerator. The fix is an iron filter or a softener at the supply, sized from a water test.
The cubes freeze together into one solid block.
Usually water trickling past the inlet valve between cycles, often because deposit is holding the seat fractionally open, so the mould keeps topping up and the cubes bond. The other cause is simply not using the ice: cubes left for weeks sublimate at the surface and re-freeze into a mass. Emptying the bin every few weeks keeps it loose and improves the taste as well.
Should I set the freezer as cold as it will go for better ice?
No, and doing so causes problems. Around zero degrees Fahrenheit is the target. Much colder and the drops left in the fill tube after each cycle freeze before the next fill, creating the ice plug that is the most common recurring ice maker complaint, and the mould can freeze hard enough that the harvest struggles and the ejector jams.
How much ice should a refrigerator ice maker actually make?
Roughly three to five pounds a day, in batches of eight to ten cubes, with each batch taking about ninety minutes to two hours to freeze and harvest. That is plenty for ordinary use and not enough for entertaining, and no repair changes it, because the limit is freezing time rather than a component. If you regularly need more, a dedicated undercounter machine is the answer.
Do you repair undercounter and standalone ice machines?
Yes, along with refrigerator ice makers and dispensers. A dedicated machine is a different appliance: it runs a large volume of water through an evaporator continuously and needs descaling and sanitising two to four times a year.
