Appliance Repair in Lilburn, GA
Appliance Repair in Lilburn, GA
Lilburn is missing both ends of the usual range. Only 173 of its 22,443 homes predate 1960 and only 1,986 were built in 2010 or later — nine in ten houses here went up between about 1970 and 2009, and 85 per cent of them are detached. So there is very little live warranty and very little genuinely old housing. What there is instead is a town full of appliances somewhere between eight and twenty years old, which is exactly the band where the repair-or-replace question is hardest and where specific components start going in a predictable order.
- What fails, and roughly when, is more predictable than people expect. There is a table below
- Age alone is a bad guide. Which part failed decides it, and the split is consistent
- Median finished repair in our own book: $355, middle half $255 to $427

Appliance down in Lilburn?
Make, model number, roughly how old the machine is, and what it actually does. Those four let us tell you on the phone whether this is a cheap repair or a decision. The $99 diagnostic is applied to the repair.
The Middle Years, Component by Component
An appliance does not wear out all at once. It loses components in a rough order, set by how many cycles each one does and how hard. Knowing that order is genuinely useful in a town like this, because it tells you whether the fault in front of you is an ordinary mid-life item or the start of the end.
| Component | Typical stage | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Door and boot seals, hoses, filters | Any age, faster if neglected | Cheap. Always repair |
| Dryer belt, rollers, idler pulley | Mid-life. Noise is the warning | Cheap. Repair |
| Heating elements and thermostats | Mid-life, sooner if the duct is blocked | Repair, and fix the duct or it recurs |
| Drain pumps and inlet valves | Mid-life | Repair |
| Washer suspension and dampers | Mid-life, much sooner if overloaded | Repair. Left alone it kills the bearing |
| Refrigerator defrost heater, thermostat, evaporator fan | Mid-life | Repair. These are the common fridge faults |
| Washer tub bearing | Late. Rumble that grows with spin speed | Borderline. Once, maybe. Twice, no |
| Control board, out of warranty | Any age, but expensive whenever | Usually the point to stop |
| Sealed refrigeration system | Late | Decided by the warranty, not the age |
Read the verdict column and the pattern is plain: almost everything mechanical is worth repairing, and the two that end a machine are a repeat bearing and an out-of-warranty board. A fifteen-year-old washer with a pump fault is a good repair. A six-year-old one with a board fault often is not, which surprises people who assume newer means more worth saving.
Two things worth knowing about that table. Suspension is the row people ignore — a washer that has started to knock or walk is wearing its own bearing every time it spins, so a cheap repair now prevents the expensive one later. And a heating fault is very often not the element: restricted airflow makes a dryer overheat and cut out, so fitting an element into a blocked duct simply buys the same failure again.
The appliance lifespan database gives expected service life by appliance, and our repair or replace calculator does the arithmetic once you know which row you are in.
How to Tell How Old It Actually Is
This matters here because a house bought second-hand usually came with appliances of unknown vintage, and people guess badly from how a machine looks.
- Find the model and serial plate. Inside a refrigerator on the left-hand wall or behind a crisper; on a washer or dishwasher around the door frame or under the lid; on a range on the frame behind the storage drawer or the back panel
- Write down the full serial number, not just the model. Most manufacturers encode the build date in it, and the scheme differs by brand
- Give it to us on the phone and we can usually tell you the age before we arrive, along with whether the parts are still made
Two minutes of that changes the conversation from a guess into a decision, and it costs nothing.
A Town Built in Its Middle Decades
| Measure | Units | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Detached houses | 18,993 | 85% |
| Attached houses and townhouses | 1,000 | 4% |
| Built 2010 or later | 1,986 | 9% |
| Built before 1960 | 173 | under 1% |
| Manufactured homes | 261 | 1% |
| Occupied, rented | 5,219 | 24% of occupied |
| All housing units | 22,443 | 100% |
With a median home value of $367,300 and a median age of 37.5, this is family suburban housing in steady use — which means appliances doing full duty cycles rather than light ones. That is the load pattern the table above assumes.
A note on the small newer slice: on the 1,986 homes built since 2010 it is still worth checking cover before paying anyone. Appliance warranties are layered — the whole machine typically one year, the sealed refrigeration system commonly five years on parts, the compressor on many brands up to ten — and cover travels with the appliance rather than the owner, so a house bought second-hand may carry warranty nobody has used. Our Ruskin page sets that out, and Dacula covers what a connected appliance’s error code does and does not tell you.
On water, Gwinnett is on county supply from surface sources, generally low in scale-forming minerals, so deposit is worth investigating rather than assuming here. The soft-water catch is detergent over-dosing, which a washer reads as an overload — our Snellville and Grayson pages cover what soft Gwinnett water does and does not do.
What We Repair in Lilburn
| Appliance | Common mid-life faults |
|---|---|
| Washers | Drain pumps, inlet valves, suspension and dampers, door seals, then bearings |
| Dryers | Belts, rollers, idler pulleys, elements and thermostats — duct first, always |
| Refrigerators | Defrost heaters and thermostats, evaporator fans, door seals, coils |
| Dishwashers | Drain pumps, spray arms, heaters, door seals, filters |
| Ovens and ranges | Elements, igniters, thermostats, door seals, controls |
| Ice makers | Modules, fill valves, fill tubes |
| Hoods and over-range microwaves | Grease-blocked filters, fan motors |
Cooktops we do repair, but we have too few finished cooktop repairs of our own to publish a median that would mean anything, so we quote from the cooking-appliance figure and give you the real part cost on the visit.
The Free Checks Worth Doing First
- Dryer takes two cycles: disconnect the duct at the back and run it a minute. Strong hot air means the duct is the problem, not the element — how to clean a dryer vent has the method
- Dryer squealing or thumping: that is usually rollers, belt or idler, and it is a cheap repair — but it gets worse and eventually strands you mid-load. A dryer that squeaks covers it
- Washer knocking or walking: level it first, all four feet loaded and lock nuts tight. If it still knocks, get the suspension looked at before it takes the bearing with it
- Washer will not drain: check the drain hose behind is not bent flat, then open the pump filter — a washer that will not drain or spin walks it
- Refrigerator warm, freezer fine: that pattern usually points at the defrost system or the evaporator fan rather than the compressor. Vacuum the coils first and give it a day — a freezer that cools while the fridge does not explains why
- Dishwasher leaving grit: lift the filter out and rinse it, and clear the spray arm holes
- Washer takes hours, clothes wet: halve the detergent for a few loads
- Anything dead: breaker and GFCI outlet before anything else

What the Work Costs
These are our own completed repairs, not a manufacturer’s estimate and not an industry average. A completed repair means a job billed above the diagnostic fee with tax, $108.90 — the machine was fixed, and parts and labour are inside the figure. The diagnostic is $99 and it is applied to the repair when you go ahead.
| Category | Median | Middle half | Repairs |
|---|---|---|---|
| All appliances | $355 | $255 to $427 | 668 |
| Refrigeration | $375 | $250 to $462 | 247 |
| Washers | $352 | $257 to $416 | 159 |
| Dryers | $354 | $284 to $390 | 136 |
| Dishwashers | $308 | $254 to $375 | 64 |
| Cooking appliances | $363 | $291 to $458 | 62 |
Every category sits within about seventy dollars of every other, so the appliance you own tells you much less about the bill than which component failed. Three quarters of finished repairs land under $427 — the figure to weigh against a new machine plus delivery and installation. Our real repair cost data breaks it down by component, which is the level that matches the table at the top of this page.
The Lilburn note: in the eight-to-twenty band the median repair is a modest fraction of a replacement, and most of what fails in that band is on the cheap side of the list. That is why our honest answer here is “repair” far more often than “replace” — and why, on the two rows where it is not, we say so plainly rather than fitting the part and letting you find out.
What to Tell Us When You Book
- Model and serial number from the plate. The serial usually gives us the age
- What the machine does, not what you think has failed
- Any noise, and when it started. A growing rumble and a sudden bang mean different things
- Whether anything has been replaced before, and what
- Where the laundry is, and how long the dryer duct run is if you know
- Whether the sink drains normally, if the complaint is a dishwasher
Around Lilburn
We cover Lilburn and the surrounding central Gwinnett area. East, Snellville and Grayson share the same detached-house pattern and the soft-water question, and Dacula is the newer end of the county. West, Peachtree Corners is townhouses and apartments at a high price point, Chamblee mixes mid-rise with 1950s houses, and Dunwoody is condo territory. The full list of towns is on our service area page.
East, Lawrenceville is the same subdivision era at four times the size, and its page covers what a second-floor laundry asks of a washer: levelling on a floor that flexes, secured drain hoses, and shut-off valves you can actually reach.
