Induction: What Is Normal and What Is Not

Induction is the change most people notice first, because it does not behave like a coil or a gas burner. It heats the pan directly with a magnetic field rather than heating a surface that then heats the pan, and almost every complaint we take about a new induction hob comes from that difference.

Normal, and confirmed by the manufacturers:

  • Pulsing on and off at low settings. The hob modulates power by switching the coil on and off in cycles, and it does that more frequently the lower the setting.   • A fan that keeps running after everything is off. The electronics under the glass are cooled by that fan and it runs on until they are back to temperature
  • Buzzing or humming from the pan, loudest on high power with a light multi-ply pan. It is the pan’s own layers vibrating in the field, not the hob failing
  • A zone that will not light at all with one particular pan. Induction needs a ferrous base — if a kitchen magnet does not stick firmly to the bottom of the pan, the hob cannot see it
  • A pan that is too small for the zone not being detected. There is a minimum base diameter per zone, given in the manual

Not normal, and worth a call: a zone that has stopped working with pans that used to work on it, a code on the display that repeats, a hob that shuts down mid-cooking and needs a rest before it will restart, or any crack, chip or bullseye mark in the glass.

Cracked or chipped glass means stop using the hob. The glass is the only barrier between the electronics beneath and anything spilled on top, and a crack lets liquid through onto live components. Switch it off at the breaker and book it, rather than using the other zones in the meantime.

One more induction habit worth knowing: never heat an empty pan on a high setting. There is nothing in it to absorb the energy, the base reaches a temperature it was never meant to see, and both the pan and the glass can be damaged in under a minute.

  • Heat-pump and condenser dryers run long by design. They dry at a much lower temperature and recover the heat instead of throwing it outside, so a cycle is genuinely longer.   • A new dishwasher is quieter, slower and uses less water. Cycles of two to three hours are ordinary now; a machine that finishes in fifty minutes is running a short programme, not working better
  • Refrigerators with linear or variable-speed compressors do not switch hard on and off, they run gently for much longer periods. A fridge that seems to be running constantly and is holding temperature correctly is doing what it should
  • Connected appliances report a code, not a diagnosis. The code tells us which sensor or circuit is unhappy, and a good number of them have several possible causes — Dacula sets out why the code is the start of the work rather than the end of it
  • Steam and convection ovens need the water reservoir descaled on the interval in the manual, and hard water shortens that interval. Skipping it is the most common reason a steam function stops steaming

The Free Checks Worth Doing First

  • Induction zone not lighting: hold a magnet to the pan base. No grip, no heat — and check the pan is big enough for the zone
  • Any code on a display: write it down exactly, then power the machine down at the breaker for a minute and see whether it returns. A code that comes back is real; one that does not was a glitch
  • Dryer suddenly taking much longer: on a heat-pump or condenser machine, clean the condenser behind the lower flap. That is the step almost nobody knows about

One of my pans will not work on the hob.
Then it is almost certainly the pan. Induction heats the pan itself by inducing a current in it, so the base has to be ferrous — hold a kitchen magnet to it, and if the magnet does not grip firmly the hob cannot see the pan at all. Aluminium, copper and many stainless pans without a magnetic layer simply do not work. Size matters too: each zone has a minimum base diameter, given in the manual, and a small pan on a large zone may not be detected. A warped base is the third case, because induction needs flat contact with the glass.
The cooling fan keeps running after I switch the hob off.
That is correct operation. The power electronics that drive the coils sit under the glass and get hot while you cook, so the fan continues afterwards until they are back to a safe temperature. On a long, hot session it can run for several minutes. The same is true of many modern ovens. What is not normal is a hob that reduces its own power or shuts a zone down during cooking — that suggests the electronics are not being cooled properly, which can mean an obstructed air path beneath or a failing fan, and it is worth looking at before it becomes a board failure.
There is a chip in the glass of my cooktop. Can I keep using the other zones?
No — switch it off at the breaker and book it. The glass is the only barrier between the electronics underneath and everything that gets spilled on top, so a crack or a chip is a route for liquid onto live components. It also tends to spread from thermal cycling, so a small mark becomes a long crack. Cooktop glass is usually replaceable as a part, and getting the machine looked at early is what keeps it a glass job rather than a glass plus electronics job.
My new dryer takes far longer than my old one.
If it is a heat-pump or condenser machine, that is by design rather than a defect: it dries at a much lower temperature and recycles its own heat instead of exhausting it, which is gentler on clothes and far cheaper to run, but genuinely slower. What is worth checking is whether it has got slower than it was. These machines need the water tank emptied, the lint filter cleaned and — the step almost nobody is told about — the condenser or heat exchanger cleaned behind the flap at the bottom front. A blocked exchanger is the usual reason one has slowed to a crawl.
My refrigerator seems to run all the time.
On a newer machine that may be exactly right. Variable-speed and linear compressors are designed to run for long, gentle periods rather than cycling hard on and off, which is quieter and more efficient, so continuous quiet running with correct temperatures is not a fault. Judge it on temperature rather than on sound: the refrigerator compartment should sit at or below 40 degrees Fahrenheit and the freezer at zero. If it is running constantly and drifting warm, that is a real fault and worth a call quickly, because refrigeration is the one appliance where waiting costs you the contents.
Should I call the manufacturer or you first on a new appliance?
If the machine is still inside its warranty, call the manufacturer or the dealer first — an unauthorised repair can end cover that was otherwise live, and that cover is layered rather than a single term, with sealed refrigeration commonly running longer than the rest of the machine. Look for the paperwork or check the model and serial number with the maker.
