Why the Basement Dryer Is the Local Case

A dryer does one thing: it heats air, pulls it through wet clothes, and pushes the wet air outside. Everything else is detail. If the wet air cannot leave quickly, the clothes do not dry, and no part on the machine will change that.

A laundry room on an outside wall vents in two or three feet. What a Restricted Duct Looks Like From the Laundry Room

  • Clothes need two cycles, and the second one works better than the first because the drum is already hot
  • The load comes out hot and damp rather than warm and dry. Heat is being made and the moisture is not leaving
  • The machine gets hotter than it used to and the outside of the cabinet or the door glass is uncomfortable to touch
  • It shuts off early, mid-cycle, and restarts after a rest — that is a thermal cut-out doing its job
  • The laundry room is humid, or there is condensation on cold surfaces nearby
  • Lint on the outside vent hood is heavy, or the flap does not open fully when the dryer runs

That list matters because the same symptoms are produced by a failing heating element, a bad thermostat or a tired blower wheel, and those are parts we can sell you. A restriction is not.   • Run the dryer and go outside to the vent hood. The flap should be pushed fully open with a strong, warm flow. Weak or lukewarm means a restriction between the two ends
  • Look at the transition duct behind the machine. Crushed flexible duct behind a dryer pushed hard against the wall is the most common restriction in the house, and it costs nothing to pull the machine out a few inches
  • Count the elbows and pace out the run. Subtract five feet for every 90 and two and a half for every 45 from the 35-foot allowance
  • Check the terminal itself for a screen. Some vent hoods come with a mesh insert meant for other appliances; on a dryer it blocks with lint and must come out
  • Anything dead: the breaker before anything else. On an electric dryer, a half-dead machine that tumbles but never heats is often one leg of the supply rather than a part

If the run is genuinely too long for the house, a listed booster fan is the accepted answer where the code permits it — and rerouting to a nearer wall is often cheaper than either. Both are worth pricing against a dryer that will keep cooking itself.

That is the machine protecting itself from overheating, and it is a symptom of poor airflow far more often than a faulty thermostat. Rerouting is often the cheaper of the two and it needs no maintenance afterwards.
Is flexible duct allowed behind the dryer?
A short listed transition duct between the machine and the wall is normal; the concealed run itself should be smooth-walled rigid metal. The practical failure is mechanical rather than legal: flexible duct crushes when the dryer is pushed back against the wall, and a crushed section is the single most common restriction we find in a laundry room. Pull the machine out a few inches and look. Also check that the joints are not fixed with screws that project into the airway, because every protruding screw collects lint exactly where air is trying to pass.
My dryer tumbles but never heats.
On an electric dryer that specific combination often points at the electrical supply rather than a part. A dryer runs its motor on one leg of a 240-volt supply and its heater across both, so losing one leg leaves a machine that tumbles happily and never gets warm. Check the breaker — both halves of a double-pole breaker — before anything else. If the supply is sound, then the element, the thermal cut-outs and the thermostats are the next things to test, and by that point airflow is worth checking too, since an overheat is what takes cut-outs out in the first place.

Tell the office or the landlord first.
