Below the Sewer Line: the Ejector Pump

This is the one that catches people, and it is worth understanding because the symptom points at the wrong machine.

How to tell it apart from an appliance fault, before you book anyone: run the washer on a drain or spin cycle and go and listen in the basement. If you can hear the ejector pump run and the level clear, the pump is doing its job and the fault is upstream in the washer.
