How to tell it apart in two minutes, before booking anyone: time a bucket. Disconnect the washer inlet hose into a bucket, open the tap fully and see how long it takes to fill a known volume. Compare that with an outside tap or a bathroom tap. If the laundry supply is dramatically slower than the rest of the house, the pipe feeding it is the problem and no appliance repair will change that. The test before you call anyone: run the kitchen sink hot for a full minute and watch how fast it clears, then run the washer and watch the standpipe, and note whether using one affects the other. If several fixtures are slow, the stack is the problem and it is a plumber’s job. If only one machine is slow while everything else is fine, that machine is ours.

My basement washer will not drain.
Find out whether it can. If the machine sits below the level of the building drain it cannot empty by gravity, so the waste goes into a sealed pit and a sewage ejector pump lifts it to the main line. When that ejector struggles, the pit fills faster than it empties and the washer reports a drain fault while its own pump works perfectly. Run a drain or spin cycle and go and listen: if the ejector runs and the level clears, the fault is in the washer; if you hear nothing, or it runs without clearing, that is a plumbing job. A blocked pit vent produces exactly the same symptom as a worn pump.
The breaker trips when the washer and dryer run together.
That is the circuit, not either machine. Post-war kitchens and laundries were not wired for the number of simultaneous loads a modern household runs, so two appliances can exceed what a shared run was designed to carry. Note what else was on when it went. Please do not fit a larger breaker — the rating protects the wiring behind it, and increasing it removes the protection rather than solving the problem. If an outlet or plug ever feels warm, or you see discoloured terminals, stop using it and call an electrician.
Will a new refrigerator fit where the old one is?
Measure before ordering, and measure the route as well as the space. Standard widths have held up reasonably well since the 1950s but depths and door swings have not — a modern French-door model is deeper than its predecessor and needs more clearance to open fully, which a compact post-war kitchen may not have. Check the doorways and any turn between the front door and the kitchen too. None of that stops a replacement working, but the fitting can become part of the price, and it is much easier to discover with a tape measure than with a delivery van outside.
Is an older appliance worth repairing here?
