Appliance Repair in Hudson, FL
Appliance Repair in Hudson, FL
Hudson has a median age of 60.3 and a median home value of $234,300 — the lowest of any town we cover on this coast — with 4,222 manufactured homes out of 19,304 units and 2,980 homes held for seasonal or occasional use. That combination means the question people actually ask here is not “can it be fixed”, it is “is it worth fixing, and is there anything I can do myself first”. So this page answers those two directly, including the jobs we think you should not pay us for and the three we will not let you do.
- Several common faults are genuinely a homeowner job. We have listed which, below, with the method
- Three are not, ever: sealed refrigeration, gas, and anything on a 240-volt circuit you are not sure about
- Median finished repair in our own book: $355, middle half $255 to $427
- Call (863) 474-2970, or book online. Ask us on the phone whether it sounds like a DIY one
Appliance down in Hudson?
Tell us what the machine actually does and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth a visit. Some of what people book us for costs nothing to fix. The $99 diagnostic is applied to the repair.
What You Can Genuinely Do Yourself
It costs us work to publish this and we would rather publish it than take a diagnostic fee for something that needed a screwdriver and ten minutes. Every one of these is a real fault we get called out for, and every one is within reach of an ordinary person with basic tools.
- Washer will not drain, or drains slowly. Most front-loaders and some top-loaders have a pump filter behind a small hatch at the bottom front. Put a shallow tray and towels down first, because water will come out. Unscrew it, remove what is in it — coins, hair grips, lint, sand — rinse it and screw it back. A washer that will not drain or spin has the sequence
- Washer will not fill, or fills slowly. Shut both taps, unscrew the inlet hoses at the machine, and look at the fine mesh screens in the valve inlets. Rinse them and refit. This is a five-minute job and it is one of the most common calls we take — a washer that will not fill covers it
- Dishwasher not cleaning or leaving grit. The bottom filter is designed to be lifted out and rinsed under the tap. Then check the spray arms spin freely and their holes are not blocked — a cocktail stick clears them. How to clean a dishwasher is the routine
- Dryer taking two or three cycles. Almost always airflow. Clean the lint screen properly, then disconnect the duct at the back and clear the whole run, including the flap outside — how to clean a dryer vent has the method. This one also matters for safety, not just drying time
- Refrigerator not cold enough. Pull it out, vacuum the condenser coils, make sure there is clearance behind it, and check nothing inside is jammed against the internal air vents. Then give it a full day before judging
- Washer walking or banging. Spirit level across the top, adjust the feet until all four carry weight, tighten the lock nuts against the cabinet. In a manufactured home this is very often the entire fault
- Front-loader smells. Wipe out the folds of the door boot seal, dry them, and leave the door ajar between loads — a washing machine that smells explains what a clean cycle fixes and what it does not
- Anything completely dead. Check the breaker and any GFCI outlet on the circuit before assuming the machine has failed
If you try one of those and it does not solve it, you have not wasted anything — you have ruled it out, and that makes our visit shorter and more certain.
Three Things We Will Not Talk You Through
These are not us protecting the work. They are the ones where a mistake is expensive or dangerous.
- Sealed refrigeration systems. The compressor, condenser, evaporator and the tubing between them are a closed pressurised circuit containing refrigerant. Opening it needs certification and equipment, releasing refrigerant is illegal, and a badly done repair destroys the compressor. If the fault is in there, it is a technician’s job or a replacement decision — and on a machine under about ten years old, check the warranty first, because sealed systems are commonly covered for five years and compressors on many brands for ten
- Gas. Gas ranges, gas dryers, and any propane conversion. A wrong orifice, a disturbed connection or a partly seated fitting is not a fault you find out about gradually. This includes changing a range between natural gas and propane, which is an orifice change and a regulator adjustment rather than a knob
- 240-volt circuits and anything with scorching. Ranges and dryers run on 240 volts. If you open a connection and see discoloured, melted or scorched terminals, stop — that is an electrician’s job, and a heavy appliance load on a marginal connection is exactly the situation that produces it
Everything outside those three is a conversation we are happy to have on the phone.
Is It Worth Fixing? The Honest Version
In a town where a lot of households are on fixed incomes, this deserves a straight answer rather than a sales one. The age of the machine matters far less than people expect. What decides it is which component failed.
| What failed | Typical verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Pump, belt, roller, valve, thermostat, igniter, door seal, suspension | Repair, at almost any age | Mechanical parts stay available and stay inexpensive for a long time |
| Heating element, drive motor | Usually repair | Common parts, straightforward labour |
| Control board, out of warranty | Often replace the machine | The most expensive single part, in the machine most likely to need something else next |
| Sealed refrigeration system | Depends entirely on the warranty | Commonly five years on parts, up to ten on the compressor. Check before spending |
| Cabinet, tub or drum damage | Usually replace | Labour outweighs the part |
Three quarters of our finished repairs come in under $427, and that is the number to hold against a comparable new machine plus delivery and installation. Our repair or replace calculator walks the arithmetic and the appliance lifespan database gives the expected service life by appliance.
There is a Hudson-specific thumb on the scale. With 4,222 manufactured homes here, replacement is often not simply a delivery — the new machine has to clear the doorway and the hallway and fit the existing bay, and compact sizes cost more than their full-size equivalents rather than less. Where that is your situation, repairing stays sensible for considerably longer than the machine’s age would suggest.
When the Part No Longer Exists
On older machines this comes up, and it is worth understanding rather than being surprised by.
Manufacturers stop making parts for discontinued models, but that is not the end of the story. In practice there are three tiers, and we work down them:
- Original manufacturer parts, where they are still produced. First choice, and for anything safety-related or electronic the only choice we will fit
- Superseded parts. Manufacturers frequently replace an old part number with a newer equivalent that fits the same machine. A part being “discontinued” often just means it has a different number now, and looking that up is part of the job
- Reputable aftermarket, for straightforward mechanical items like belts, rollers and hoses where the specification is simple and the quality is known
What we will not do is fit an unknown-quality part into a safety-critical position, or improvise something into a gas or electrical component. If we reach the point where the machine genuinely cannot be repaired properly, we will say so on the day and you will have paid the diagnostic and nothing more. That is a better outcome than a repair that fails in three months.
Manufactured Homes, Seasonal Homes and the Coast
Three more Hudson conditions, each of which we have written up properly elsewhere rather than repeating here.
| Measure | Units | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Manufactured homes | 4,222 | 22% |
| Detached houses | 11,946 | 62% |
| Held for seasonal or occasional use | 2,980 | 15% |
| Occupied, owner-occupied | 11,317 | 77% of occupied |
| Occupied, rented | 3,374 | 23% of occupied |
| Built 2010 or later | 844 | 4% |
| All housing units | 19,304 | 100% |
Manufactured homes change the building rather than the repair — doorway clearance, compact appliances with their own parts lists, a framed floor on piers that lets an unlevel washer walk, and dryer ducts that drop through the floor. Full account on our Zephyrhills page.
Seasonal homes come back to fused ice maker moulds, pump seals that took a set standing dry, flattened door gaskets and dry drain traps letting smells in. What to do before closing up and what to expect on opening is on our Dunedin page.
The coast brings salt air, which does not evaporate, keeps surfaces damp because it draws moisture from humid air, and corrodes condenser fins and fan motors — rinsing exposed coils with fresh water a few times a year genuinely helps. That is on our Apollo Beach page. If an appliance has been in surge water rather than salt air, read our Tarpon Springs page before switching anything on — some submerged components must be replaced rather than dried and reused.
What We Repair in Hudson
| Appliance | Common causes |
|---|---|
| Refrigerators | Defrost systems, evaporator fans, corroded coils near the water, door seals |
| Washers | Drain pumps, inlet screens, levelling on framed floors, bearings and suspension |
| Dryers | Elements, thermostats, floor-drop duct runs, thermal cut-outs after long restriction |
| Dishwashers | Filters, spray arms, drain faults that are really the sink, heaters |
| Ovens and ranges | Elements, igniters, controls, propane conversions |
| Ice makers | Modules, fill valves, fused moulds after a season standing |
| Cooktops | Gas electrodes and ports, glass zones |
Cooktops we do repair, but we have too few finished cooktop repairs of our own to publish a median that would mean anything, so we quote from the cooking-appliance figure and give you the real part cost on the visit.
Straight to the Appliance
If you know which machine is the problem, these go into the fault rather than the town: refrigerator repair, washer repair, dryer repair, oven repair, dishwasher repair and ice maker repair.
What the Work Costs
These are our own completed repairs, not a manufacturer’s estimate and not an industry average. A completed repair means a job billed above the diagnostic fee with tax, $108.90 — the machine was fixed, and parts and labour are inside the figure. The diagnostic is $99 and it is applied to the repair when you go ahead.
| Category | Median | Middle half | Repairs |
|---|---|---|---|
| All appliances | $355 | $255 to $427 | 668 |
| Refrigeration | $375 | $250 to $462 | 247 |
| Washers | $352 | $257 to $416 | 159 |
| Dryers | $354 | $284 to $390 | 136 |
| Dishwashers | $308 | $254 to $375 | 64 |
| Cooking appliances | $363 | $291 to $458 | 62 |
Every category sits within about seventy dollars of every other, so the appliance you own tells you much less about the bill than which component failed. Our real repair cost data breaks it down by component, which is the level that actually helps you decide.
What to Tell Us When You Book
- What the machine does, not what you think is wrong. “Fills, washes, then sits full of water” is worth more than “the pump has gone”
- What you have already tried. If you have cleaned the filter or the inlet screens, say so — it rules things out and shortens the visit
- Make and model number. Inside the refrigerator on the left wall, on the door frame of a washer or dishwasher, or under the lid of a top-loader. On an older machine this also tells us what parts still exist
- Whether the home is manufactured or site-built
- Whether it has stood unused for months
- Natural gas, propane or all-electric
Around Hudson
We cover Hudson and the coastal Pasco area around it. South, Tarpon Springs runs its own reverse osmosis plant and carries our floodwater guidance, and beyond it Palm Harbor is on the hard county blend. Inland, Odessa is split house by house between county water and private wells, and Zephyrhills is the manufactured-home town. South east, Tampa is our metro hub for this side of the state. The full list of towns is on our service area page.
