A $674 Dryer, in the Category We Price Most Tightly
Dryers are the most predictable appliance in our entire book. Across 79 completed South Florida dryer repairs the median is $366 and the middle half runs $280 to $386, the narrowest band of any category we work in. That is because a dryer is mechanically simple and its common faults are inexpensive: a belt, a set of rollers, an idler pulley, a thermostat, a door switch.
Which is what makes one Pembroke Pines job stand out. Our five local dryer repairs came in at $300, $315, $375, $391 and $674. Four of them sit inside or beside the regional middle half exactly as expected. The fifth is nearly double the regional median and is the third-highest dryer ticket we have recorded out of 135 company-wide. A dryer does not reach that figure through ordinary wear. It reaches it when the heat path has been destroyed, and the heat path is destroyed by one thing.
Restricted airflow. If hot, wet air cannot leave through the vent, the moisture stays in the load, clothes come out damp, and the owner runs a second cycle. That second cycle is where the damage happens, because with heat unable to escape at the designed rate the thermal components run hotter than intended, cycle after cycle, until the element, the thermostats or the fuse give out — and on a bad one, more than one of them together. The part people phone about is the element. The cause was the duct, months earlier.
Pembroke Pines is a city built for that failure mode. Incorporated in 1960, it grew westward through the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s in large master-planned communities, and those communities carry a great many two-storey homes with the laundry room placed for convenience inside the house rather than against an outside wall. That means a duct that has to travel a long way to reach a termination, around structure, with elbows, and frequently with a vertical section. Every elbow slows the airstream and lint settles wherever air slows. A vertical run adds the problem of lint carried partway up falling back and packing into the horizontal section below it.
Look at where our work comes from and the picture holds: six of our fourteen jobs are in 33028 and four in 33024, the heart of the built-out city, and dryers are 35.7 percent of everything we do here against a company-wide 17.6. That is not an accident of small numbers. It is a housing pattern producing a fault pattern.

What Appliance Repair Costs in Pembroke Pines
The figures below come from our own completed jobs. The Pembroke Pines row is the local book, 14 completed jobs with a part replaced on 10. The per-appliance rows are drawn from our wider South Florida service area, 471 completed jobs, with the job count shown so you can weigh each figure yourself. Every number is the full ticket: part, labour and the service call together.
| Appliance | Median repair | Middle half of jobs | Jobs behind the figure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Washer | $380 | $255 to $478 | 61 |
| Refrigerator and freezer | $375 | $255 to $453 | 141 |
| Dryer | $366 | $280 to $386 | 79 |
| Dishwasher | $355 | $255 to $379 | 29 |
| Oven and double oven | $389 | $295 to $398 | 13 |
| Stove and cooktop | $350 | $275 to $375 | 17 |
| Pembroke Pines, all appliances | $350 | $289 to $396 | 10 |
| Diagnostic visit | $99 | flat | applied to the repair when you approve it |
By appliance the local counts sit under our threshold of eight jobs for publishing a median, so here are the jobs. Dryers: $300, $315, $375, $391 and $674. Refrigeration: $207, $255, $375 and $412. The single dishwasher repair was $325. Note what the local median hides: take the $674 out and this is an ordinary city, and that one job is the entire difference between a routine book and a memorable one.
What Actually Breaks in Pembroke Pines
| Appliance | Jobs | Share of local calls | Company-wide share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Refrigerator and freezer | 5 | 35.7 percent | 36.5 percent |
| Dryer | 5 | 35.7 percent | 17.6 percent |
| Washer | 3 | 21.4 percent | 24.9 percent |
| Dishwasher | 1 | 7.1 percent | 11.2 percent |
| Cooking appliances | 0 | none so far | 8.5 percent |
Refrigeration and washers sit almost exactly on their company-wide shares, which is what an ordinary city looks like. Dryers at 35.7 percent are double theirs, and that is the one figure carrying information. Unlike Sunrise, where seven dryer calls came with a single washer call, here washers show up in normal proportion — so this is not a case of one machine failing while its partner does not. It is a case of the dryer half of ordinary laundry pairs failing more often than it should.
Where We Work in Pembroke Pines
| ZIP | Part of the city | Jobs | What they were |
|---|---|---|---|
| 33028 | West Pembroke Pines, the master-planned communities | 6 | 2 dryers, 2 refrigeration, 2 washers |
| 33024 | Central and east Pembroke Pines | 4 | 2 refrigeration, 1 dryer, 1 washer |
| 33029 | Far west, toward the conservation edge | 1 | 1 dryer |
| 33027 | South-west, on the Miramar line | 1 | 1 dryer |
| 33025 | South, on the Miramar line | 1 | 1 dishwasher |
| 33023 | South-east, toward Hollywood | 1 | 1 refrigeration |
Ten of our fourteen jobs come from 33028 and 33024, which between them cover the bulk of the built-out city. The dryer work is not concentrated in one ZIP or one community — it appears in four of the six — which argues against a single bad building or a single bad installer and for something general about how laundry is vented in this housing. Pembroke Pines was incorporated in 1960 and grew westward through the following four decades, so most of what we work in is planned single-family and townhouse construction rather than older stock or towers.
Match the Symptom to the Likely Cause
| What you see | Most likely cause here | What helps before the visit |
|---|---|---|
| Dryer needs two cycles to dry a load | Restricted vent run, often long with elbows | Lint screen clean, check the outside flap opens |
| Dryer got worse gradually over a year or two | A duct slowly filling rather than a part failing | Try to date when it changed |
| Dryer shuts off part way through a cycle | Overheating on restricted airflow | Stop using it and book the visit |
| Laundry room gets hot and humid while it runs | Exhaust leaking into the room rather than leaving | Check the connection behind the machine |
| Fresh food warm, freezer still cold | Evaporator fan or the defrost circuit | Listen for the fan with the door switch held |
| Refrigerator clicks every few minutes, never runs | Start relay or start device | Note the interval between the clicks |
| Washer will not drain, water left in the drum | Drain pump or the pump filter | Empty the pump filter, check for a coin |
| Dishwasher leaves grit on the lower rack | Spray arm holes or the filter | Unclip the arm, hold it up to the light |
Long Runs, Elbows and Two Storeys
If you live in a two-storey home with the laundry upstairs or in an interior room, your vent run is the single most important thing about your dryer and you have probably never looked at it. Here is how to, and it takes ten minutes.
Go outside while the machine is running on a heat cycle and find the termination — a hood or a flap on a wall or roofline. The flap should be open and the airstream strong enough to push a sheet of kitchen paper clearly away from it. A flap that barely lifts, or a stream you have to hunt for, is a restricted run, and it is telling you now while everything still works. If you cannot find the termination at all, that is the first thing to resolve.
Then look at the path. Pull the machine forward and see how the duct leaves it, and count the changes of direction between there and the outside as best you can. Manufacturers publish a maximum run length with a deduction for every elbow, and your own manual will give the numbers for your machine. A run with three elbows behaves like a much longer straight duct. A vertical section is worse again, because lint carried partway up falls back and packs into the horizontal part below.
Finally, look at the material. Thin flexible foil duct is the worst thing you can have: its ridged interior catches lint, it crushes when the machine is pushed back against the wall, and installers leave slack so a three-foot gap ends up holding five feet of coiled tubing. Semi-rigid aluminium for the short connection and rigid metal for the concealed run is what the manufacturer’s figures assume. Swapping a foil connector for semi-rigid takes minutes and costs very little, and it is the cheapest thing you can do for the appliance.
Where the run is long, has several elbows or rises through a storey, an annual professional duct clean is not optional maintenance, it is the thing standing between you and an element. And the habit that matters more than any of it: stop running a second cycle to compensate. That habit doubles the time the heat path spends working in air that cannot carry heat away, and it is precisely how a duct problem becomes a $674 repair.
