The Slab Under Your Washer Is Sloped on Purpose

This is the finding that surprises people most, and it is the one we see over and over in Safety Harbor. A carport slab, a patio, a screened-porch floor and a garage apron are all poured with a deliberate fall in them, because they have to shed rainwater away from the house. The slope is usually somewhere around a quarter of an inch per foot. It is not a defect. It is the entire point of the slab.

Now stand a washing machine on it. A washer needs to be level within a very small tolerance, because a spinning drum carrying an unbalanced wet load generates enormous side loads, and the suspension is designed on the assumption that the machine is sitting square. The fix is free and takes ten minutes. Put a spirit level on top of the machine, front to back and side to side. Then adjust the feet — almost every washer and dryer has screw-in levelling feet at the front, and many have them at the rear too — until it reads level in both directions and does not rock when you push a corner. On a sloped slab the front and rear feet will end up at noticeably different heights, and that is correct. If your machine sits on a pedestal or a stacking kit, level the pedestal, not the machine.

Do this before you call anyone about vibration, walking or an aborted spin. A fair share of the visits we make for those symptoms end in a spirit level rather than a part, and we would rather you kept the money. If it is still shaking after it is genuinely level, the fault is real and worth a technician — a washer that will not spin goes through the rest.

A Dryer Can Only Work With the Air It Is Given

The second consequence of laundry-outside-the-house is about air, and it is badly understood. A vented dryer does not manufacture dry air. It pulls in whatever air surrounds it, heats that air, passes it through the clothes so it can pick up moisture, and pushes it out of the duct. The whole machine is a device for moving water from your laundry into the air.

Which means the air it starts with sets the ceiling on how well it can possibly work. Air that is already close to saturated has very little capacity left to absorb more water. Every cycle it dumps hot, saturated air into the room and then draws that same air back in. Under those conditions clothes essentially stop drying, the room gets damp, and lint coats everything. That is not slow. That is a closed loop, and it needs the duct routed outside.

How to tell which one you have, in one minute: disconnect the duct at the back of the machine and run it for a minute into open air. Strong hot air out of the bare outlet means the dryer itself is fine, and the problem is downstream in the duct or in the air the room is giving it. Weak or cool air means the appliance. A front-load washer standing in humid outdoor air deserves one specific mention. Its door boot seal is a folded rubber trap that holds water after every cycle, and indoors it dries out between loads. In outdoor humidity it may never fully dry, and the folds grow the black ring that no wash cycle removes. Leaving the door ajar between loads genuinely helps and costs nothing. Keller facility from Tampa Bay Water’s regional supply, the same blend of Floridan aquifer groundwater, treated surface water and desalinated seawater that serves several hundred thousand people across the county.

What that does mean is that your water is hard — county figures put it around 150 to 210 milligrams per litre, roughly 9 to 12 grains per gallon — and that scale is a real cause of appliance failure here. It is simply the county’s hardness rather than anything to do with the springs.
