A house built as a lakeside summer place has a particular set of characteristics, and they persist through every renovation: small rooms, low ceilings in parts, narrow doorways, tight stairs, and a footprint that was never meant to hold a family’s whole year. The dryer row is a safety matter rather than an inconvenience. A dryer moves a large volume of warm, moist, lint-laden air and it must vent outside. In converted porches and basements, ducts have sometimes been run into a crawl space, a roof void, or simply left short — which puts several litres of water into the structure every load. Compact Appliances Are Not a Downgrade

People in small old houses often assume they are stuck with a bad compromise. Worth saying plainly: compact appliances are a proper category, not a stripped-down one, and in a house like this they frequently outperform a full-size machine that barely fits.

  • Eighteen and twenty-four inch dishwashers exist and work well. In a kitchen where a full-size unit means losing the only usable run of cupboard, the smaller machine is the better outcome
  • Twenty-four inch ranges and cooktops are made by mainstream manufacturers and are not exotic
  • Under-counter refrigerators and compact columns suit kitchens that cannot take a 36-inch appliance without blocking a doorway
  • Stacked and all-in-one laundry puts a washer and dryer in the footprint of one machine, which in a converted cupboard is sometimes the only way it happens

The practical point for repairs: compact models carry their own parts lists, different from their full-size equivalents, so the model number decides the visit here more than anywhere. A Lake, and What Damp Does

My dishwasher has never drained properly.
In a kitchen built before dishwashers were normal, that is usually installation rather than the machine. Two causes account for most of them. The drain line has to rise in a high loop above the sink connection before it drops, or sink water siphons back into the machine — in a retrofit nobody was checking and it frequently was not done. And if the drain was teed into a garbage disposer, the disposer arrives with a plug in that inlet which must be knocked out at installation; where it never was, the machine has literally never been able to drain. Both are cheap to correct.
There is damp near the dryer in the basement.
Find out where the duct terminates before you run the machine again. A dryer moves a large volume of warm, moist, lint-laden air and it has to go outside. In converted porches and basements, ducts have sometimes been run into a crawl space or a roof void, or left short entirely, and that puts several litres of water into the building every load — a damp and mould problem first and a fire risk second, because lint settles wherever the air slows. Stop using it until the run reaches outside, and clean the whole run while it is apart.
Why does my dryer take longer in summer?
Partly the air it is drawing in. A vented dryer works by carrying moisture away in the air it takes from the room, and in a damp basement or a screened porch in August that air is already carrying a lot of moisture, so it can hold less. The machine is not faulty and no setting changes the physics. What you can control is the duct: keep it as short and straight as possible, clear it properly, and make sure the outside flap opens freely. If it is slow in winter too, then the duct or the machine is worth looking at.
My freezer on the porch keeps switching off.
Check the GFCI outlet first. Damp locations are on GFCI protection for good reasons, and in persistently humid air a nuisance trip is common — which means a freezer can be off for days before anyone notices. That is a strong argument for a simple freezer alarm or a wireless thermometer, which costs a fraction of one load of food. Also worth checking: whether the appliance is working past its rated ambient temperature in summer, and whether the condenser coils have loaded with dust, which happens much faster in an unconditioned space than in a kitchen.
Is it worth repairing rather than replacing here?
More often than in most towns, and for a practical reason rather than sentiment.
