A Refrigerator Is a Heat Pump, and Heat Has to Go Somewhere
A refrigerator does not make cold. It moves heat out of the cabinet and releases it into the room through the condenser, and the compressor adds its own heat on top. If that heat cannot leave the immediate area, the machine is trying to dump warmth into air that is already warm — so it runs longer, works harder, and still drifts up in temperature.
Manufacturers state the clearances they need. GE’s published figures are typical of the industry: around half an inch at the sides, an inch at the top, and an inch or two at the back, with the exact numbers given in each model’s installation instructions. Those are not comfort margins. They are the air path.
In a house built before 1940 that has been remodelled two or three times, what we find instead is:
- A cabinet built down to the top of the fridge, often decades ago for a shorter machine, leaving no top gap at all
- A recess sized to the previous refrigerator, with the new one wedged in hard against both sides
- The back flat against the wall, sometimes with the rear grille pressed into the plaster
- A radiator, a range or a dishwasher immediately alongside, feeding warmth straight into the condenser
- Storage on top and around, which finishes off whatever air path survived
The symptoms read exactly like a failing appliance: running almost constantly, warm at the top of the fresh-food compartment, ice cream soft in the freezer, condensation on the door seals, and a noticeably hot cabinet side. Very often the machine is fine and the kitchen is the problem.
Before you replace a refrigerator that “cannot keep up”, measure the recess and check the manual’s clearances. A machine that has been strangled for years may well have a genuine fault by now — but fitting a new one into the same space buys the same failure, and a taller, deeper model makes it worse. Depth matters as much as width: standard-depth machines need room for the door to swing past the adjacent cabinet before the drawers will come out at all.
What to Check, and What It Costs to Fix
- Pull the machine out and look at the back. On most free-standing refrigerators the condenser coils are underneath or behind, and in an old kitchen they are usually matted with dust. Vacuuming them is free and it is the single most effective thing you can do
- Check the top gap with your hand. If a cabinet sits directly on the machine, that is a joiner’s fix and it is worth doing before any parts are bought
- Check the side gaps. Half an inch each side is the usual minimum, and a machine touching a wall on one side and a cabinet on the other has nowhere to breathe
- Feel the sides of the cabinet. Warm is normal, hot is not
- Test the door seals with a sheet of paper: close the door on it and pull. It should grip all the way round. In an old kitchen a floor that is out of level will rack the cabinet slightly and let one corner go
- Check the appliance is level and sits square, because an out-of-level fridge will not close itself and the seals then run against the frame unevenly
Where the fault is genuinely inside the machine, refrigeration is our largest category and its range is the widest of the six: a median of $375, middle half $250 to $462.
