Appliance Reliability Research Library
Independent, sourced research on appliance reliability, lifespans, repair costs, and failure rates across the U.S. Every figure on these pages cites a primary source. All data is free to reference and cite — a link back to the source page is appreciated.
This library is maintained by Neighborville Appliance Repair, a multi-location service company. The numbers here come from real service-call records combined with published industry data — not manufacturer marketing.
Data and Statistics
How often appliances fail, how long they last, and how Americans decide between repair and replacement.
Repair Cost Guides
Part-by-part repair pricing pulled from real service calls, broken down by appliance type and component.
Repair Cost by City
Full local price breakdowns by metro — real service-call data, city by city.
Brand Reliability
How brands actually hold up, ranked on real service-call data rather than manufacturer claims.
Problem and Solution Guides
Symptom-by-symptom guides — causes, the tests to run, and real repair costs.
Cooling, Water and Drainage Faults
The symptoms we are called out to most, each with the tests to run first and our own repair costs.
Cooking, Microwaves and Ice
The appliances the rest of this library covers least, each with the free checks first and our own repair costs.
Brand-Specific Fault Guides
The same faults on the platforms that account for most American kitchens and laundry rooms.
Appliance Guides and Comparisons
Plain-English answers on how appliances work, what to choose, and how the parts compare.
Choosing a Repair Service
How to hire well and get honest pricing before the technician arrives.
How this library is organised
These pages exist to answer a question without selling you a repair. They are grouped by the kind of question people actually arrive with, and the sections above follow that order.
Numbers and comparisons
The data pages carry figures you can cite: repair costs by appliance, lifespan by region, failure rates and reliability by brand. If you are deciding whether to spend money on a machine, start with the repair-vs-replace calculator and the lifespan database.
Something has gone wrong right now
The problem guides walk one symptom at a time, cheapest cause first, and say plainly which checks are free and which need a technician. The most-read ones are a washer that will not drain, an oven that will not reach temperature and an ice maker that stopped.
Understanding the machine
The explainers cover the parts nobody names in a manual: what an agitator is, how a washing machine drum is built, front-load against top-load, upright against chest freezer, and gas against electric. Useful before buying, and useful when a technician uses a word you do not know.
Using and citing these figures
The cost and reliability figures come from work we actually do, and the pages say which. If you are writing about appliance repair costs, quote the number with the page it came from and we would rather you linked than paraphrased, because a number without its definition is how bad statistics start. Every page states what is included in a price: parts, labour and the service call together, with the $99 diagnostic separate and waived on approval.
Where a figure comes from an outside body rather than our own jobs, the page names the source. Where our sample is too small to publish honestly, the page says so instead of showing a number, which is why some appliances have a full part-by-part table and others do not.
When reading is not the answer
Two situations where you should stop reading and call. A refrigerator or freezer losing temperature, because food is on a clock. And anything involving gas, a burning smell or visible arcing, because those are not diagnostic problems. For everything else, the guide above is written to save you a service call where a service call is not needed.
Need the repair rather than the reading? What we repair and where we work, or call (863) 474-2970 in Florida and (281) 205-1474 in Texas.
Need the repair, not just the data?
Neighborville technicians service all major brands across nine metros — same-day diagnostics in most areas.
