So the first question on a wine cabinet that will not get cold is which type it is and how hot the room gets. If it holds 55 degrees in January and drifts to 68 every August, and the unit is thermoelectric, nothing inside it is broken. The answer is a different appliance or a cooler location, and we will tell you that rather than sell you a repair that cannot work.

  • They vent through the front, not the back. A built-in unit is designed to draw air in and push heat out through a grille at the plinth. Block that grille — with dust, with a decorative panel, with a rug — and the machine is trying to reject heat into a sealed box
  • Zero clearance is a specification, not a promise. Only units actually rated for built-in installation can be enclosed. A freestanding unit put under a counter will run hot and fail early, and that is a misapplication rather than a fault
  • The grille needs cleaning far more often than a kitchen fridge’s coils, because it is at floor level in a busy room. Twice a year is a sensible minimum
  • Under-counter ice machines add drainage. Most need a gravity drain or a pump, and a slow or blocked drain line produces symptoms that look like a production fault — cloudy or hollow ice, a unit that stops mid-harvest, water in the bin

The Free Checks Worth Doing First
