Appliance Repair in Doraville, GA
Appliance Repair in Doraville, GA
Doraville is a town where appliances change hands a lot. 6,181 of its 10,843 occupied homes are rented — 57 per cent — 1,353 of its 11,893 units predate 1960, and only five per cent were built since 2010. Median age is 33.4. Older housing, high turnover and modest budgets mean a great many machines here were bought secondhand, inherited with a lease, or moved in from somewhere else — so the question we get asked most is not “can you fix it” but “is this one worth buying at all”. Here is how to judge that in ten minutes.
- The model and serial plate tells you the age. That is the first thing to look at, not the paintwork
- Six checks separate a bargain from somebody else’s problem. They are below
- Median finished repair in our own book: $355, middle half $255 to $427

Appliance down in Doraville?
Make, model number, what the machine actually does, and whether you bought it new or used. If you are about to buy one, we will tell you on the phone what to look at first. The $99 diagnostic is applied to the repair.
Six Checks Before You Buy a Used Appliance
A secondhand machine can be excellent value. It can also be somebody offloading a fault. The difference is usually visible in ten minutes if you know where to look, and none of this needs tools.
| Check | What you are looking for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1. The model and serial plate | That it exists and is readable | The serial usually encodes the build date. No plate means no age and no parts lookup |
| 2. Run it, do not just plug it in | A full short cycle, start to finish | Most faults only appear under load. A machine that lights up proves nothing |
| 3. Listen on the spin | A rumble that grows with speed | That is the tub bearing, and it is the repair that ends washers |
| 4. The door seal and the drum edge | Mould in the folds, tears, rust under the lip | Seals are cheap; rust in the cabinet is not |
| 5. Behind and underneath | Water stains, rust, mineral crust, fresh sealant | Old leaks leave marks. Fresh sealant means somebody has been in |
| 6. Inside the panel, if you can see it | Tape on wiring, missing screws, scorched terminals | ⛔ Scorching or a bypassed safety device means do not buy it |
Two rules on top of those. A machine that cannot be run is not a bargain, it is a lottery ticket — if the seller cannot demonstrate a cycle, assume there is a reason. And ask what has already been replaced: belts, rollers, pumps, valves and elements are ordinary and reassuring, while a control board or a tub bearing that has already been done once tells you where the machine is in its life.
On refrigeration specifically, run it for at least an hour before deciding. A fridge that is cold in the first ten minutes proves nothing; what matters is whether it holds temperature and whether the compressor cycles rather than running continuously. Listen for a click-and-hum every few seconds without starting, which is a start relay or an overload on the way out.
What the Serial Number Is Worth
This is the single most useful two minutes you can spend, whether you own the machine or are thinking about buying it.
- Where the plate is: inside a refrigerator on the left-hand wall or behind a crisper; on a washer or dishwasher around the door frame or under the lid; on a range on the frame behind the storage drawer or the back panel; on a dryer inside the door or on the back
- Write down or photograph both numbers, model and serial, not just the brand
- The serial usually encodes the build date. The scheme differs by manufacturer, and we read it as a matter of course — so tell us on the phone and we can often give you the age before we arrive
- The model number tells us whether parts still exist, which on an older or unfamiliar machine is the other half of the decision
Why it changes the answer: a fifteen-year-old machine with a pump fault is a good repair, because mechanical parts stay available and cheap. The same machine needing a control board usually is not. Without the age you cannot tell which conversation you are in, and in a town where machines arrive with the apartment or from a listing, nobody usually knows. The appliance lifespan database gives expected service life, and our repair or replace calculator does the rest.
Moving a Machine Without Breaking It
Secondhand appliances get moved, and moving is where a working machine becomes a broken one. Three things account for most of it.
- Front-loading washers have transit bolts. They hold the drum during transport and are removed at installation. If a machine is moved again without them, the suspension takes the whole load on every bump — which is why a washer that worked at the seller’s house arrives knocking. If the bolts are long gone, move it gently and level it carefully at the other end
- Refrigerators need to stand before being switched on. Laid down or heavily tilted, oil from the compressor can move into places it should not be. Standing the machine upright for several hours before powering it up lets that settle. Switch it on immediately after a tilted move and you can damage the compressor on start
- Hoses and cords get crushed. Supply hoses that were fine become kinked or split, and a drain hose bent flat behind the machine at the new address produces a drain fault that looks like a pump failure. Replace supply hoses when you move a washer — they are consumables and they are cheap compared to a flood
And at the new address, level it properly: spirit level across the top front to back and side to side, all four feet carrying weight, lock nuts tight against the cabinet. On an upper floor or an old timber floor that matters even more.
The Housing, in Numbers
| Measure | Units | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Detached houses | 5,408 | 45% |
| In buildings of twenty units or more | 1,274 | 11% |
| Attached houses and townhouses | 1,019 | 9% |
| Built before 1960 | 1,353 | 11% |
| Built 2010 or later | 552 | 5% |
| Occupied, rented | 6,181 | 57% of occupied |
| All housing units | 11,893 | 100% |
With 57 per cent of homes rented, the ownership question decides who pays: an appliance supplied with the property is normally the landlord’s to repair, and one you brought or bought is yours. Report a landlord’s appliance in writing as well as by phone, describe what the machine does rather than diagnosing it, and do not arrange your own repair expecting reimbursement without that in writing. Owners and managers: give us an approval limit at booking and most jobs finish first time.
The older eighth of the stock brings the retrofit faults that older kitchens carry — a dishwasher drain with no high loop, a disposer knockout never removed, a washer standpipe of the wrong height, a dryer duct that does not reach outside. Our Dade City page walks that checklist. Next door, Chamblee covers what heavy cooking does to extractor hoods, which applies here too.
On water, DeKalb is on county supply from surface sources and generally low in scale-forming minerals, so deposit is worth investigating rather than assuming. The soft-water catch is detergent over-dosing, which a washer reads as an overload — see Snellville.
What We Repair in Doraville
| Appliance | Common causes |
|---|---|
| Washers | Drain pumps, inlet valves, suspension after a move, door seals, then bearings |
| Dryers | Blocked ducts, elements, thermostats, belts and rollers |
| Refrigerators | Defrost systems, evaporator fans, start relays, coils under dust, door seals |
| Dishwashers | Filters, missing high loops on retrofits, spray arms, drain faults that are the sink |
| Ranges and ovens | Elements, igniters, controls, anti-tip brackets never refitted after a move |
| Hoods and over-range microwaves | Grease-blocked filters, fan motors |
| Compact and stacked laundry | Unstacking access, own parts lists, levelling |
Cooktops we do repair, but we have too few finished cooktop repairs of our own to publish a median that would mean anything, so we quote from the cooking-appliance figure and give you the real part cost on the visit.
The Free Checks Worth Doing First
- Washer knocking after a move: level it first. If it still knocks, the suspension took the trip badly and that is a modest repair — but left alone it wears the bearing
- Refrigerator will not cool after a move: if it was tilted or laid down, it should have stood upright for several hours before being switched on. Listen for a click-and-hum every few seconds, which points at the start relay
- Washer will not drain: check the drain hose behind is not bent flat, then the pump filter — a washer that will not drain or spin covers it
- Dryer takes two cycles: disconnect the duct at the back and run it a minute — how to clean a dryer vent has the method
- Dishwasher not draining: filter first, then run the kitchen sink hot for a minute
- Range rocks on an open door: the anti-tip bracket was not refitted. Worth doing straight away
- Refrigerator not cold enough: vacuum the coils, give it clearance, check the internal vents — a refrigerator that is not cooling walks it
- Anything dead: breaker and GFCI outlet before anything else

What the Work Costs
These are our own completed repairs, not a manufacturer’s estimate and not an industry average. A completed repair means a job billed above the diagnostic fee with tax, $108.90 — the machine was fixed, and parts and labour are inside the figure. The diagnostic is $99 and it is applied to the repair when you go ahead.
| Category | Median | Middle half | Repairs |
|---|---|---|---|
| All appliances | $355 | $255 to $427 | 668 |
| Refrigeration | $375 | $250 to $462 | 247 |
| Washers | $352 | $257 to $416 | 159 |
| Dryers | $354 | $284 to $390 | 136 |
| Dishwashers | $308 | $254 to $375 | 64 |
| Cooking appliances | $363 | $291 to $458 | 62 |
Every category sits within about seventy dollars of every other, so the appliance you own tells you much less about the bill than which component failed. Three quarters of finished repairs land under $427 — the figure to weigh against a new machine plus delivery and installation. Our real repair cost data breaks it down by component.
The Doraville note, said plainly: on a machine bought secondhand for a couple of hundred dollars, a repair at our median is a large share of what you paid, and we will tell you that rather than fit the part quietly. Mechanical faults are still worth doing. A control board on an unknown-age used machine usually is not, and in that case you pay the diagnostic and nothing more.
What to Tell Us When You Book
- Model and serial number from the plate — the serial gives us the age
- Whether you bought it new or used, and how long you have had it
- Whether it has been moved recently
- Whether anything has been replaced before, and what
- Whether the appliance came with the property, and who approves the work
- Whether the sink drains normally, if the complaint is a dishwasher
Around Doraville
We cover Doraville and the surrounding north DeKalb area. Next door, Chamblee deals with what heavy cooking does to extractor hoods, and Dunwoody is condo and high-rise territory. East, Pine Lake is a tiny village of pre-war cottages, and further out Lilburn and Snellville are detached-house Gwinnett. South, Forest Park has older stock where most machines have been repaired before. The full list of towns is on our service area page.
