Before You Book: the Checks the App Cannot Do

  • Will not drain: pull the machine out and look at the drain hose — a hose bent flat against the wall is a very common cause. Then open the pump filter behind the hatch at the bottom front, over a tray. A washer that will not drain or spin covers it
  • Will not fill: check both taps are fully open, then shut them, unscrew the hoses at the machine and rinse the inlet screens — a washer that will not fill covers it

New Houses Mean Live Warranties

Check three things before you book. Pull the machine out and look at the drain hose, because a hose bent flat against the wall is a very common cause and costs nothing to fix. Then open the pump filter, usually behind a small hatch at the bottom front — put a tray and towels down, because water will come out. And check the kitchen or utility sink is draining normally, because a slow house drain backs a washer up and no work on the machine will change it. If all three are clear, then the pump or the pressure sensing is worth looking at and the code has done its job.
My dryer says it has a heating fault. Is the element gone?
Often not. Restricted airflow makes a dryer overheat, and the machine responds by cutting the heat and reporting a heating fault — so the code is frequently a consequence of a blocked duct rather than a failed element. Disconnect the duct at the back and run the machine for a minute: strong hot air out of the bare outlet means the dryer is working and the restriction is downstream. The freezer in my garage cannot cope in summer.
That is usually the room rather than the machine. Refrigerators and freezers are rated to work within a stated range of surrounding air temperature, printed in the manual and read by almost nobody, and an uninsulated garage in a Georgia August goes past what a standard model was designed for. The compressor runs continuously and the cabinet still creeps up, which looks identical to a failing appliance. The test is seasonal: fine in January, struggling every July means the ambient is winning. Put a thermometer in the garage air, shade and ventilate the appliance rather than pushing it against a hot wall, and clean the condenser coils, which load with dust much faster in a garage.
Our laundry is on the first floor. Anything I should watch?
One thing above all: the supply hoses. A washer upstairs sits above finished ceilings, so a hose that splits does not make a puddle, it makes a ceiling — and the damage is orders of magnitude worse than the appliance. Supply hoses are consumables rather than permanent fittings; braided stainless hoses are worth the small extra, and it is sensible to shut the taps if you are going away for any length of time. Beyond that, levelling matters more upstairs than on a slab, because a floor structure transmits vibration through the house, and an out-of-balance washer on a joisted floor is both louder and harder on itself.
Is the water here hard enough to cause scale?
Much less than on the Gulf coast. Gwinnett is on county supply drawn from surface sources, and surface water off Piedmont Georgia geology is generally low in scale-forming minerals, so deposit on an ice maker mould or a dishwasher element here is worth investigating rather than assuming. What soft water does cause is detergent over-dosing: the amount most people are used to produces persistent suds, and a washer reads suds as an out-of-balance overload, so it adds rinses, extends the cycle and drops the spin speed. The complaint arrives as a machine that takes hours and leaves clothes wet. Try halving the dose for a few loads first.
